Coronavirus - the new strain XXIV

1296 on Monday vs 965 the week before. There's no way that this peak is smaller than the Autumn one blowing that little theory out of the water. The blame is landing on the failure to complete the booster programme, which has now ground to a halt and the prevailing idea that this is all over. Take care over Christmas folks.

Unfortunately you are correct.

The patterns seen in previous data have not continued and we are still seeing around 300 deaths a week with Covid on the death certificate and 500 deaths a week where the person had a positive Covid test in the past 28 days. So despite the odd person posting in this thread and the mainstream press stating that Covid is over, it isn't.

Unfortunately you are correct.

I wonder what the logic is for treating this as a seasonal illness, re boosters when the graph in front of us points to a year round problem. Only half of the 50-65 set bothered to get one...

"Now that we're getting to the end of the year, it's worth looking at the toll of the 'mild & acceptable' illness that COVID is hailed as by many. Here's a thread of measurable toll in the UK in 2022 since omicron - considered the 'mild' variant of COVID spread"

"COVID remains a leading infectious cause of death, with deaths from COVID-19 just lower than those from influenza *and* pneumonia (which includes multiple infectious causes of pneumonia, not just the flu) - so comparing SARS2 with multiple pathogens..."

Hospitals are beginning to restrict visiting due to the covid and flu surges - a very good indication that we are facing another big wave...

"“The UK is now experiencing a significant spike in winter illnesses including COVID, flu, RSV and norovirus. The current variants are very infectious, and we are seeing numbers rise in both hospitals with some patients being very unwell.

“As a result, we are suspending visiting on adult inpatient wards and are asking all patients and visitors to wear masks when coming to the hospital. This will help us to prevent the spread of infection and keep our vulnerable patients safe from these winter illnesses. "

The NHS has made an urgent appeal to people in Greater Manchester to only go to A&E departments if they have "a life-threatening emergency".

High numbers of patients and staff sickness has led to pressure "beyond anything we have experienced before", NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care said.

An increase in flu and Covid was also blamed for "very long waits".

No covid update but there has been a flu update:

Flu continues to spread in England with number of hospital patients up 79%
NHS England medical director urges people to have vaccinations against Covid and flu to minimise ‘twindemic’

“It is clear this is no time to be complacent and the risk of serious illness is very real, so with nearly 350,000 available vaccination appointments next week it is important that everyone eligible comes forward and gets their Covid and flu jabs at the earliest opportunity.”

Rishi Sunak ‘dithering’ over Covid testing of passengers from China
Senior Tory backbenchers say testing should be in place and ask why Cobra has not met to discuss surge in Chinese cases

“We should be taking our own precautionary measures ... we do not know what variants of Covid have developed in China in the three years of their lockdown,” he told LBC radio.

“Any dithering leaves us as a hostage to fortune ... The later you leave any action, the less impact it will have. Let’s get testing in place for passengers regardless of nationality of all incoming flights from China.”

Ellwood asked: “Why hasn’t Cobra met to come to the same conclusion? If there’s any doubt whatsoever then we need to take action and take it immediately.”

We have people having heart attacks and strokes lying on A&E floors unseen for 24, 48 ... hours, yet we shouldn't bother to test arrivals from China? The reason Sunak is dithering is because "it's his all over" bullshit begins to fall apart. China has not been reporting the emergence of variants and the detail of particular mutations so we have no idea what is circulating there.

What an earth would be the point? How are you going to test travellers for a new bloody variant? Zero disease prevention value, just xenophobic brain farts from two right wing Tory idiots to further their own agenda, while also distracting from all the things you mention. Why help these clowns.

Lots more folk I know are catching covid (again). They all say it’s no worse than a cold but would suggest numbers are on the rise again.

Not sure if true but I think I'd read that it is mainly a cough now, everywhere I've been pre Christmas everyone was hacking like no tomorrow. Coincidentally the cough medicine shelf at Sainsbury's was empty yesterday.

I've got a cough now but it's nothing worse than anything seasonal that usually goes around this time of year.

In every 20 cases there is another long covid - 'just a cough' it certainly ain't.

The other thing to be aware of is the lateral flow tests are often ineffective for people who are vaccinated, hence the need for PCR to be made available again.
