Coronavirus - the new strain XXIV

UK scientists take ‘promising’ step towards single Covid and cold vaccine
Francis Crick Institute in London says area of spike protein of Sars-CoV-2 could form basis of jab against variants and common cold

“There’s a lot of research still to do as we continue to test S2 antibodies against different coronaviruses and look for the most appropriate route to design and test a potential vaccine.”

Gosh. That would be an amazing legacy of covid if we found a cure for the common cold!

ONS is now catching up

The latest ONS report, for the week ending 20 July, the estimated Covid rates were:
  • One in 20 in England - down from one in 17 the week before
  • One in 19 in Wales - down from one in 17
  • One in 16 in Northern Ireland - up from one in 20 (although experts say the trend is uncertain)
  • One in 19 in Scotland - down from one in 15
[Still very high - be careful out there at the airport or the other dangerous places]

The UK government’s “personal responsibility” policy for covid is hypocritical and unsustainable

"The Westminster government is acting hypocritically by saying that individuals must take responsibility for mitigating covid risks while abdicating its own responsibility. It has ignored evidence based advice on how to enable people to avoid risk, and individual members of the Westminster government have not even followed their own edicts. By ignoring the advice of its behavioural science advisers, the Westminster government’s failure to accept its own responsibilities has neither enabled the public to exercise responsibility, nor prevented continuing high levels of avoidable disease, disruption, disability, and deaths from covid-19."

Well just tested positive this evening and feeling pretty grotty. Had it previously in March '20 and triple jabbed.

Very similar here. The latest insulting advice is if you test positive with a LFT ($10 each, thank you) go get a PCR test ($150+) just in case you get long covid, because without a positive PCR as proof of Covid you may not be able to get paid time off, disability pay, or even treatment for long covid etc.

No mention of what if your LFT is negative (LFTs give a lot of false negatives). Should we all just fork over $150 for a PCR each time we get a cold, just in case it's needed later to be able to take paid sick time or disability pay or treatment ?

A&E waits are now “apocalyptic” and “worse than ever imagined” leaked NHS data shows, and could be driving 1,000 patient deaths a month, The Independent can reveal.

Almost 700,000 people have waited more than 12 hours in A&E in the first seven months of 2022, according to leaked NHS data.

"The NHS has been collecting data on 12 hour waits measured from the moment a patient arrives in A&E. This data, as previously uncovered by The Independent, is far higher than the official figures published by the NHS each month, which only measure the time waited after a decision to admit a patient is made."

Then there's the waiting time to get booked in. On my recent visit around 20 mins and that is at probably the newest, state of the art A&E in the country, Wexham Park in Slough. Incredible 'new' purpose built £49 Million facility opened 2019 but overwhelmed when I went there.

Pretty soon it will get to the stage where "the only option" is to bring in the Hospital Corporation of America to run the NHS hospitals, because only a private corporation can deliver a "more efficient" NHS (more efficient at transferring government funds into private bank accounts).

Perfect storm of Brexit and a Govt trying to prove the NHS needs more privatisation.
Australia must look very attractive to anyone in the NHS able to emigrate.

My mother has been in severe pain for several months and her NHS treatment has been somewhere between appalling and abysmal: a shocking combination of miscommunication and apparent lack of concern. I have near zero faith in the NHS, in its current form, to treat her in a timely manner, if at all. It is very worrying.

I remember the NHS was in a very poor state in 1997 when I moved from the UK to the US - I waited over a year for an endoscopy despite significant pain. The Tories have done it again. when will the electorate learn !?!?

In the latest ONS report, for the week ending 26 July , the estimated Covid rates were:

  • One in 25 in England - down from one in 20 the week before
  • One in 30 in Wales - down from one in 19
  • One in 17 in Northern Ireland - down from one in 16 (although experts say the trend is uncertain)
  • One in 20 in Scotland - down from one in 19
"Our most recent data suggests that infection rates have continued to decrease across much of the UK, although rates still remain high," said Dr Rhiannon Yapp, co-lead for the ONS survey.

"We have seen continued decreases in all regions and age groups in England.

"With the summer holidays and more people travelling, we will continue to closely monitor the data," she added.
