Coronavirus - the new strain XII

Sorry to hear about that & get well soon. There does appear to have been big difference across schools, some are better able to manage due to space etc.

My other half’s school has managed to go all half-term without a Covid case but this is quite rare.
I work in a very small building, a converted Edwardian type villa. My classroom is small. It’s also a special school for behaviour/SpLd/Autism so quite a lot of handling by staff. I was apprehensive when I started and this has proven to be a justifiable anxiety. About 80% staff have tested positive.

Best wishes Del, look after yourself. Most people get a mild-moderate experience, like proper flu. For us the fatigue was the worst, and the 'brain fog' also. Some days will be better, some may be worse, don't try to overdo it on the better days, just go with the flow. Get rest, keep eating and take fluids. If you're like we were, booze won't be a temptation, which is probably sensible anyway. Do you have friends and neighbours who can shop for essentials for you?
Thanks.Treating it like flu. And remembering to continue with my blood pressure tabs etc.most obvious thing is pressure on my chest though this fluctuates. Coughing has increased. Fatigue is definitely apparent.

Look after yourself Del.
Anyone know what the criteria is to implement tier two/three? Also it seems that most infection is via the workplace or family/home interactions. Is there any research regarding pubs?
I ask because I live in Eden where cases are rising and quite high despite being one of the most sparsely populated areas in England

Take care Del. I couldn’t get out of bed for 3 days, wife had far milder symptoms. Drink plenty of water even though you probably won’t feel like doing so.

My brother is in a care home, he is learning disabled & contracted it earlier in the year; it is impossible to have 'distance boundaries' in such situations. I wish you a speedy recovery.

I’m using a digital thermometer at the moment. Temp is ok.

The odds are that you will be fine. No drinking! I've was given some good advice from the gp, should you become unwell with breathing problems, follow your own oxygen level and go straight to A&E if this drops below say 90%. Don't take any crap from the "nhs" call centre, who specialise in putting people off going to hospital, the sooner you get there the better. Watch out for bruising and swelling in the feet too since you have high bp. ATB

Now in ‘Level 3’ here so I’ve had a better read of the local guidance (link). I just don’t see how it can be effective with schools, universities, religion and restaurants/pubs serving food etc still open. It isn’t going to act as any kind of firewall, I just don’t see the logic as key transmission routes are not impeded.

PS Take care Del. I second the recommendation to get an Oximeter, I bought one of these Contec ones months ago (Amazon) as they seemed well reviewed and apparently accurate. Everyone should have access to one IMO.

It isn’t as effective. It’s a calculated risk by the Tories because they know how much they screwed the economy themselves and now they’re driving on empty. Damn this Gov. worst in history.

This is the annoying part, pubs/restaurants have a minimal effect on infection. Schools/Universities seem to be significant but it is all guesswork as we don’t have effective track & trace or quick testing.

You state that as though it is a fact. Please show some evidence. I’d have thought serving mind-altering inhibition-reducing drugs to people in enclosed spaces during a global pandemic wasn’t exactly the best idea. Even if one ignores aerosol transmission, which is increasingly well documented, I can’t see a scenario where say the toilets are deep cleaned between each customer. As I’ve said previously you could stick £1k in nice fresh £50s on the table and say “That’s yours if you order some food and a drink in there!” and I’d refuse as it just isn’t an acceptable risk IMO.

I linked to evidence the other day from American States showing the adverse impact of opening bars and restaurants...

Even your posts.

Here’s a report on a CDC study which does show that transmission in restaurants is significant.

There's a very good Washington Post article too from about the same date.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/09/14/covid-spread-restaurants-bars/?arc404=true

"States that have reopened bars experienced a doubling in the rate of coronavirus cases three weeks after the opening of doors, on average. The Post analysis — using data provided by SafeGraph, a company that aggregates cellphone location information — found a statistically significant national relationship between foot traffic to bars one week after they reopened and an increase in cases three weeks later."

Which also links to this Centers For Disease Control report:

"Eating and drinking on-site at locations that offer such options might be important risk factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Efforts to reduce possible exposures where mask use and social distancing are difficult to maintain, such as when eating and drinking, should be considered to protect customers, employees, and communities."

The Government here (and SAGE) is just not telling us...

We don’t have any concrete evidence either way. Households mixing seems to be the main driver. They closed gyms in tier 3 areas only to reopen them when presented with evidence to the contrary.

We need better data, test & trace with geo targeting so we can see where people went, how long they spent there etc. We don’t have anything so are just blindly making assumptions.

Personally I will only go into a restaurant if they have good measures in place & many do. I am probably more at risk from my wife/daughter who work/attend school but I am not going to move out.
