Coronavirus - the new strain XI

Pubs to shut at 10 pm. Work at home if possible, wear a mask, tough penalties. Rule of 6 extended to no more than 15 people meeting up indoors e.g. weddings and indoor team sports - not even the 2m rule reinstated. Starmer, somewhat meekly, supports. That's all folks - as they say at the end of all the best cartoons.

It's an utter joke frankly, we are in for a serious amount of corpses!

Well that's 4926 positive cases today and 37 deaths!!

There were 237 hospital admissions in England on Sunday (latest) - that's up 20% over a couple of days, although the rate of growth still seems linear through September with 10 extra hospitalisations per day on average. Sunday may be a blip or it may be the first sign of acceleration...

Let's call that Johnson's baseline for judging the effectiveness (or otherwise) of his latest intervention. Hopefully at least some people will have got the message.

This week the words ‘batshit’, ‘crazy’ and ‘fruitloop’ are brought to you by Tory MP Desmond Swayne. On Sky just a moment ago with a tirade of anti-science Trumpian ‘face-masks invade our liberties’ bullshit. How do these morons ever get elected? Ah, wait, FPTP...

Or alternatively, thousands of schools are open and 5 out of 6 pupils are at school nationwide. Kids being educated and spending times with friends is a good thing isn’t it?

I think so. Have 2 'kids' one oldie and a freshman starting university and I just don't think it is fair to keep this generation at home indefinitely. Both courses appear at the moment to have virtually no attendance at college. If this drags on it is going to be a lost generation. My daughter has got covid already whilst working on a covid ward and was completely asymptomatic. She is now back in college going for another degree . She had asthma as a child. Her friend a nurse got covid also and came through fine. If stats show young people up to 30-40 are a much lower risk factor I think they have to be allowed in to colleges and schools. Yes use masks, hand hygiene , spacing in lecture halls and class rooms but let them have some sort of normality. The rest of us will have to be just more careful around them.

Some recent facts for Ireland over the last week.

Of the cases announced today, 72% are under the age of 45.
Two-fifths of cases of Covid-19 in the last two months involve people between the ages of 15 and 34, the Acting Chief Medical Officer has said.

I will be curious to see what happens over the next 4 weeks with hospital numbers. If low I believe a rethink on how the young are being asked to shoulder the burden.

Yes but the best advice was to teach a few kids at a time to keep schools safe, see above. Numbers are still low compared to March but that's a lot of kids who are getting no education at all, 1.6m approximately. Remember they'll be isolating along in their rooms for 2 weeks, think about their mental health.

Today's email from school:

Preparing for winter
As the temperature drops it will be challenging to keep warm in school – windows will remain open and we face the challenge of having the heating on and caring for the environment.
We are exploring ways in which we can make things more bearable including:

• Encouraging students to wear layers – they will be allowed to keep them on in class
• Encouraging students to wear beanie hats (not caps) – they will be allowed to wear these in class.
• Wearing gloves that they can write in (fingerless or leather/synthetic)
• Bringing an umbrella for when they are outside lining up or socialising.

There will be more to come on this, but you may want to start making your own plans and if you have any constructive ideas I would love to hear from you.

Did a return journey by train today. First trip there were 8 yoofs ( college students by look of it) not wearing masks in same group, asked them to put masks on but ignored so went on twitter to rail company’s account and tweeted the train identity and problem. Five minutes later announcement over PA quoting the legislation. Half of them put masks on.
On way home sat opposite a student who clearly had a cold and had to take his mask off to keep blowing his nose, poor sod looked miserable but if he caught a cold...
Transport companies are going to have to enforce the law or it means high risk spreaders will infect staff and other passengers. It’s a major hole in the public health measures. Eight London bus drivers lost their lives in the Spring.

These people do us a service in letting us know which constituencies we should avoid moving to.

So basically Boris has announced nothing of use ,marginal effect at best and plunging hospitality into crisis , what a great PM !
Closing pubs early will make it likely that people will go onto house parties instead where there will definately be no social distancing at all

The pfm Massive will be along in a minute to point out that you should have tweeted the government rather than the rail company and and not criticised the poor students, it's always and only the government's fault ;)

Yep, he needed to do a Sturgeon and ban household meets if he is serious about this.... but I suspect he isn't!

Another year group at my daughter's school sent home this morning (only those deemed to be close contacts will have to isolate not the whole bubble) - the number of affected schools was up 400% on last week (the first week or full week for most schools). Meanwhile outbreaks in university residences (e.g Liverpool) are being reported already - and in England they've only been back since the weekend. But isn't it great they're all being taught together ;)
