Car Number Plates

From September it will no longer be legal to have GB on your number plate.
Our govt has changed the international sign to UK.

I wish they'd change the name of the bloody Olympic team to UK as well. Why have they named it after one of the islands in the British Isles, and ignored those parts of the union that are on other islands? The Great in Great Britain means no more than the Great in Great Baddow. It doesn't mean it's a great place, or any greater than Little Baddow, just that it's larger.

It’s 28 Sept. The AA:
GB or UK sticker
You currently need a GB sticker on your car if your number plate has any of these:

  • The Euro symbol.
  • A national flag of England, Scotland or Wales.
  • Letters and numbers with no flag or identifier.
But from 28 September 2021, you'll need to use a UK sticker instead.

The GB sticker must be have black letters on a white, elliptical background. They must be at least 80mm high with a stroke width of 10mm.

In some countries like Spain, Cyprus or Malta, or countries outside the EU, you must display a GB sticker no matter what's on your number plate.”

Some Olympic sports like boxing are all Ireland so competitors represent Ireland from both the south and the north.

You are overthinking this.

Ahhh yes.. I remember them well.. There was a time in the 1950s and early 60s when I was fairly confident that many of the cars bearing them would be unlikely to get past the city boundary.. much less 'abroad'. But then I did use one in the 1980s... for an actual trip to Le Conteenong. I wonder if Johnny Foreigner will have to use them like wot they useter do when they invaded our shores with their garlic breath an' talkin' in forrin... or will we just use their EU symbol and funny letters to know who to avoid?

Many number plates these days are illegal, they have embossed lettering.
They are also sold illegally on the internet.
You are supposed to show your log book (V5) to have new plates made.

My front one has a nice 'starburst' crack where it's been whacked by a pebble or somesuch. The back one has developed a sort of 'fogging' effect, which seems to be between layers of whatever... I'm sure they are still quite legal..

Well Halford's thinks your plates are illegal and say "If either of your car number plates is cracked, broken, faded or has marks obscuring the letters and numbers, then they're illegal and need to be replaced." See here :- https://www.halfords.com/motoring/services/replacement-number-plates-made-at-halfords.html

Fine of up to £1000 apparently for a duff plate.

Well despite what Halfords might say my crazed front plate has got through 3 MOTs because, despite the damage, it is still readable.

You are meant to prove your identity, and your ownership of the vehicle..via a range of possible documents.

And again.. whatever Halford's might say, my plates have passed at least two M.O.T.s because the damage and deterioration is purely cosmetic and does not stop the plates being easily read. I'm only changing them to tidy up the car.. as I stated in my OP.

With the current rotation of mud, sun, mud and more sun i haven't seen my number plate for 6 months, no idea what it has on there.

On 26th (IIRC) September the GB changes to UK so a union flag and UK at the left of both plates will be required, or a UK sticker on the rear of the car. You can do the plates with UK now but will have to also affix a GB sticker until 26 Sept - was my reading of the changes proposed.

That's the sort of silly thing that governments love to do! Since cars were invented it was GB, everyone alive today, all over the world, grew up with GB and knew what it meant. What is the point? People will think of Ukraine or Ukbekistan! I think a national referendum is called for.
