After seeing so many interesting cameras in the thread on new-to-me cameras, I thought some people might enjoy some more photos of cameras.

Here is a Leica M8 from the bottom wearing a Noctilux with its UV/IR filter showing

Nikon D3x Nikkor Micro-D 60mm etc

I used to agree with you 100% on Apple until I bought a Mac Pro 8 core for HD video work and photo editing (Canon EOS-1D 3). Now I understand! Back to a Windoze...not in the foreseeable future:cool:
As for the D3X at £5K5 body only.... unless you have a studio then I could see the logic

Cliff,

Don't bother upgrading. There isn't a lot of missed photographic opportunities between f/1 and f/0.95.

One struggles to understand the price of a leica

garyi.

what you may not be seeing in the picture is that it's not made of plastic like the sort of japanese cameras you are used. the lenses also don't wobble like they're going to fall apart.

vuk.

The same could be said about the Pentax Limiteds (both FA and DA), and they cost chump change compared to the Leicas. There may well be reasons for buying into Leica depending on who you are, but to me the build quality would be pretty far down the list.
The caveat here is that I don't have a modern Leica lens to compare with - only an older Summicron-R and Summilux-R, so maybe modern Leicas or M-mounts really are a world apart. But really, after a certain point (which I'd probably put below Pentax Limited level - around Canon L), does it really matter if it's built any better?
Pragmatically the current 'pro'-level lenses of Nikon/Canon/Pentax are probably better built in that they are weather-sealed.

Canon L lenses, are virtually bombproof and offer stunning picture quality. Only the absolute bottom of the range lenses are made of plastic and are simply there to offer package deals with the cheaper bodies as starter packs. There is room for improvement of course and 2009 will see new , even better lenses to work with the 20 MP+ bodies coming onto the market. Comparable Nikon lenses are in the same league exhibiting little difference as back to back tests in AP show. It's often a matter of personal taste which system you go for. In 30 years of Canon and Nikon camera use I have never had a problem, period. Leica is a romantic name of course but belongs to the age of steam (nothing wrong with that of course!) Nothing against Leicas (I would love an early Leica for sentimental reasons) but when you need a 300/400/500 mm lens, there are really only 2 names in the frame..... state of the art Canon/ Nikon lenses and bodies are simply in a higher league.

Vuk, come on, just for a second step back and consider the price of leica. Its that price for one reason, exclusivity.

I don't know why Apple is mentioned Mr Cat, they can be a bit more expensive than a PC, but only a bit, leica is all the way over frikking there.

By all means take that filter off and show us the front lens !!

Here two of my Nikons before I sold off the lot. They look used and they bloody were.
