Books that made you Laugh - Recommendations

Georgina Wroe - 'Slaphead' - I read this a long time ago, can't remember much except very funny.

Tom Holt - 'Expecting Someone Taller' This book was a surprise, must read this again.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002TXZT3O/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

David Sedaris - 'When You Are Engulfed In Flames
' I have read a few of his books and seen him live, laughed soo much my guts hurt.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0349116474/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Groucho Marx - 'The Groucho Letters' - I have had this book for maybe 30 years, I don't get all the references, but still makes me hoot.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1847391036/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

3 Books that I think are very funny, but not in an obvious way. >

Charles Bukowski - 'Ham On Rye' - amazing author, funny or not this is a great book.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GQ2L0CS/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Augusten Burroughs - 'Running With Scissors' - a disturbing book, extremely funny. Not for kids...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1843541513/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Mark Haddon - 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time' - Fabulous in so many ways, we saw the play as well. Hilarious and shows some insight. I discussed this book with a man whose grandson has autism, he said it helped him to understand (a little) the way his grandson communicates.

Loved the Tom Sharpe books, James Herriot, Douglas Adams, David Niven. Current chuckle (although only short reads) are Jay Rainer's “My Dining Hell”, and “Wasted Calories And Ruined Nights”.

"This is Going to Hurt"

Reviewed - "A Good Read" R4, 5 minutes before this post.

David Sedaris should never have been born American - TOTALLY British sense of observational humour.

A novel given to me about two lads growing up in a new housing estate that has complicated and hilarious plumbing issues...the title and the author eludes me right now.

Any ideas?

Martin Amis ‘Money’. Then ‘Experience’ has some funny bits too like when expecting his dad over he would “put two cans of ‘vandal strength’ lager in the freezer” for him.

Agreed, although Experience has some achingly raw and tragic parts in it too, particulary about his cousin, Lucy Partington, who was murdered by the Wests. At these points, the metropolitan cynicism and distance present in a lot of his novels evaporates. So, it's not really a comic rollercoaster but it is, perhaps, the best thing he's ever written.

Forgot to mention Bill Bryson. “Notes From A Small Island” has a particular resonance for me - Bill frequented the same places as me in our earlier years, (sure I must have met him in my local), and he describes the times and locations to a “T”.

SWMBO and I are off to see Bill on Saturday in Manchester.

Despite my best efforts and Billy Connolly’s recommendation, I couldn’t get into Confederacy of Dunces. Whatever floats your boat I suppose. I remember laughing out loud on the train 40 years ago whilst reading “Adolf Hitler - My Part in his Downfall” by Spike Milligan. Re-reading it last month, I seemed to laugh in all the same places.

Anything by Jonas Jonasson. Currently reading the "The accidental adventures of the hundred year old man" The references to the current world leaders are hilarious.

Another recommendation for the Adam Kay book - I like short chapters as they mirror my attention span.

Also worth a recommendation Roddy Doyle - The Van , which reduced me to tears, in a good way.

Cheers

Tony

"This is going to hurt" - Adam Kay. Apart from being a very passionate statement about the precarious state of the NHS, it is also hilarious. After reading it I would not present myself to my partner covered in body chocolate and then light a candle nestling in a narrow opening not designed for candles.
I much enjoyed it on my holiday reading list. Plenty of fairly disgusting bits too - humans can be strange animals and to look after them in certain situations can be a bit gruesome - and funny.

Tom Holt has a whole series of similar books, some which are linked/sequels.

If you like them, then Robert Rankin might be up your street as well.

Rankin, Holt, Pratchett - bit of a samey production line, but a nice distraction nonetheless.

'Expecting Someone Taller' was his first book, which I read at the time. Never bothered with any others, not really a fan of Pratchett.

I have read a few autobiographies by comedians, usually they are funny (ish)

From memory; Lee Mack, Peter Kay, Frankie Boyle and Vic Reeves are worth a look.
