Best opening line in a song

gassor

There may be more posts after this.
A writer in the Herald today reviewing a Patti Smith concert said the first line in Gloria was the best ever. The one that goes

"Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine" The singer is accepting the idea of Christianity, but not its restrictions. Pretty good.

I tried to come up with something better, but can't really.

I've always liked Gram Parsons "Won't you scratch my itch sweet Annie Rich"

Or perhaps the most memorable line is "One for the money", but looks like Patti has the edge.

"You're so beautiful when you're unfaithful to me"

as screamed by Black Francis on The Pixies' Bone Machine. Though, to be honest, it's as much about the delivery as the line.

Funny, Patti's version of "Gloria" was the first thing that popped into my head too. Hard to think of anything better.

"The rusted chains of prison moons. Are shattered by the sun...."

and

"A-Wop-bop-a-loo-lop a-lop-bam-boo...."

or

"Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move, Gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove"

"Awopbopalooobopawopbamboom"

Little Richard was "accepting the idea of Christianity, but not its restrictions" while Patti Smith was still in diapers.

Arseholes, Bastards, ****ing ***** and pricks, aerosol the bricks...

wow, there is an auto edit..? I typed in the words in full. I'm impressed

'So! You take let us assume a third toke; long and slow. You vaporize and you take it in and in and in... and there is a sound like the crumpling of a plastic bread wrapper or the crackling of flame and a tone. A mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Shpongle

"Well you tried it just the once, found it alright for kicks/Well now you've found out that it's a habit that sticks".

This just flashed into my head.

"Confidence is a preference for the habitual voyeur of what is known as: parklife” – Blur

And the Happy Mondays had something like

"Son I'm only 30 and I went with your Mum cos she's dirty" Where's your Bill Shakespeare now?

Pink Floyd would have to be a contender with

"So... So you think you can tell"

A nomination for the worst would be Eleanor McEvoy:

"You'll hear better songs than this"

She wasn't wrong with that one.

Smokey Robinson:

Nothing so blue as a heart in pain,
Nothing so sad as a tear in vain.

Randy Newman:

Last night I saw Lester Maddox on a TV show
With some smart ass New York Jew
And the Jew laughed at Lester Maddox
And the audience laughed at Lester Maddox too

Ryan Adams - September

"Laura lays on the foot of the bed, mimics a noose with a telephone cord
Doctor's on the phone, then she hangs up and says "I ain't never gonna see the winter again"
And I don't know how, but she smiles"
