Isn’t the problem that economic migrants move between areas of unequal economic prospects. Do we need some global ‘levelling up’?

Yes, you hit the nail on the head. But then if there were not unequal economic prospects they would not be migrants. I was just thinking about where racism and snobbery "cross over" and/or overlap. After all there is little "racism" among the very rich. So maybe it boils down to reciprocal fear among the less rich, which focuses on cultural and/or religious diversity.

It may be fun to mock the incompetence of certain aspects of the culture war effort. But IMO it would be foolish to think that the war is over.

When the generals among the culture warriors (ie Munira and Dougie, rather than opportunistic foghorns like Farage) read Warsi’s tweet quoted in the article, the only bit that they’ll really have seen is ‘Dog whistles win votes’.

The Culture Warriors don’t care about the actual substance of any of these things and don’t really know what they’re doing: they’re just mashing all the buttons at once, knowing that eventually something will hit home. Who knows what. What makes the difference is often less that the issue resonates with the public than that it tickles the Sensible media in some way, or suits their interests: the idea that the National Trust hates Britain isn’t really any more laughable than academics hating free speech, or the left being massive racists, or the JCVI being secret anti-vaxxers, but these things are all established facts now and a lot of that’s down to regular stories in the Guardian, BBC etc.
