When the equipment doesn’t meet expectations…

My first hi fi purchase in the 90s - Kef K160s.

My dad had a pair of the Kef 105.1s so they had quite a bit to live up to!

B&W 602. Boomy ploddy bass even on the end of clean sounding amps.

Same amps on the Ruark Talisman 2 speakers and you could FEEL the difference, nevermind hear it.

... Be open to the possibility that you might not know what you’re talking about.

...

David, that's quite blunt, if I may say so.

Clearly, we have different tastes in hi-fi. But that doesn't mean one of us is right and the other is wrong. That's my whole point really - the journalism that dominated the UK hi-fi press for a long time refused to accept that there are different, legitimate tastes in hi-fi (and in writing about it). And as far as I can see that intolerance was basically a marketing ploy. I've quoted Chris Frankland as evidence of what I'm talking about. Where do you think I've gone wrong? And what's your evidence that I have?

It was much alive and tapping a few years back when Mr wobli taiible of the Audio Works was demoing his wobbly tables.

...we all have a favoured sound I presume. I kind of know what mine is now...
This is where we all want to be! I reckon I've got there too :)

My favoured sound doesn't seem to include the much-lauded Supernait 2. It sounded pretty ordinary and had limited power output and several annoyances, like its speaker cable fussiness and the power switch at the back - why??? That plus the silly amount of money it cost (for nothing-special results) put me right off boutique hi-fi.

Marantz CD 63 SE
Dynaudio Focus 160
North Star Model 192 CD-Transport
I know there are some saying all transports are sounding same but I can say „No, it‘s not“. The Rega Apollo -R is a 1000 times better than the North Star!

Linn Intek (rough as a badgers arse)
Linn Mimik (not bad really, just not great)
Rega Kyte (like a pair of transistor radios)
Arcam Alpha 7 CD (too soft and dynamically restrained)
Cambridge Audio DM Asure (shrill beyond believe, actually hurt my ears)
Focal 1038be (shrill treble, overblown bass, couldn’t live with them)

Pioneer A400 -With a lot of folk on this, did not get what all the fuss was all about.

Audio Technica ATF OC5 cartridge- good Lord that thing was BRIGHT.

Yamaha AS1100 amplifier- see above.

Others will come to me.:(

Jungson JA88 Class A amplifier- hyped at the time, really looked the part! However did not sound the part.....really could not get along with it.

Funny old game this hifi thang, can’t say I’m onboard with the Rega bossing a Gyro though :)
A fair few years ago my sadly departed hifi mate lent me his turntable ( same one as in clockwork orange ) and after a lot of setting up it needed this thick gloop as a sort of anti vibration thing? ...looked great but sounded not so good to me.

Pioneer A400 - Horrible brash sounding thing.

Cambridge Azur 851N Streamer - Sounded average at best (at least in my system).

Musical Fidelity The Preamp - Just dull and lifeless even after an upgrade by a MF upgrade specialist.

Technics SL 1500c, at least with the supplied Ortofon 2M cartridge.

People have different tastes & confirmation bias is very strong. I’ve never had the foot tapping dealer experience either.

I’d say mags like HFN/RR have been generally pro round earth/big American brands for many years; I fail to see why people hark back to the early 80s & magazines which sold about 10 copies a week.

Linn Majik level dem in mid 90's
Naim Nait 3/CD3 dem in mid 90's
