My Next Car?

Oh well, bye-bye Boxster, hello 911 -

gq3GikA.jpg

last port of call after Mundesley from London is the North Sea!

Actually the Herefordians are really nice.
Hereford sounds really nice.
Not that Mundesley with its lovely caravan sites and falling down hotels isn't.

Then again...

Nice, enjoy

I never thought I'd make that change....but there is something very special about the 911. Will you miss roof down driving? I did, hence the Targa.

What extras has the 911 got?
SWMBO's got a nice little soft top BMW if I get the urge (to drive with the roof down...). The 911's got a pretty large sunroof, so that'll do me for the odd occasion when I need to see the sky. I've had soft tops for the last fifty-three years, but I've used them roof down less and less, plus they can often be a source of trouble in one way and another, which is a bloody nuisance if they get stuck down & there's a thunderstorm coming.

There are so many options on these cars, so I dunno what's classed as "Extras". Sunroof, auto, noisy exhaust button, keyless entry, sports plus seats?

Come on then PFM. Spend my money for me.

My A5 is lovely and comfy but at 218ps a bit *meh* (the gearbox is a bit s**t too) so I want to change it. As I'm now early 50s and due a mid-life crisis, I want something faster, fun on B-Roads but comfortable enough to do 300 miles in one sitting - and I can't run two cars. Budget is £35k but really depends on what finance is there.
  • The dream car is a 911 but for my budget, it'll get me a 997.1 at best and, even from a reputable specialist, I really don't want to carry the risk associated with one.
  • I don't want a rag-top of any persuasion (no Boxsters).
  • No bucket seats or heavily bolstered seats that are going to cripple me (I have a very bad back due to kyphosis and I'm not skinny). So rules out Lotuses and BMW 3s and 4s.
  • I don't want something that looks like a shopping hatchback (no S3s, I30Ns or Golf Rs)
  • Car must be able to carry at least a weekly shop-worth of bags. (So an R8 is out of the running, which is a bit of a bummer)
  • 30mpg would be nice but not a deal breaker.
  • Cars Ive had in the past that I really enjoyed: E24 M635csi, E34 525i Sport (M5 lookalike), Saab 9000 Aero, Audi A7.
Obvious candidates on the shortlist are Cayman (981 preferred), Lexus RC-F, Jaguar XKR, Mercedes CLS63, Audi S7, Mk2 TTRS.

Any other ideas? Thanks as ever.

Use half your budget on an E92 M3 coupe, you won't lose money at least as you probably would on your other suggestions bar the 911?

E92 M3 coupe, you won't lose money

hell that is boring (yes I have driven one) - and who cares about the money loss? This is mid life crisis we are talking about not pipe and slippers.

As I'm now early 50s and due a mid-life crisis

if you are in that frame of mine - keep your wallet in your pocket.......

Cayman (981 preferred)

^^^^ Lists ends here - with a Cayman S (must be 981). Having had a 987S and a 981S, the 981 is significantly better and IME/O the best variant they made.

A Cayman seems the obvious answer - I agree with Mr gintonic. But I wouldn't be too scared of a 997.1 911, there are some beautifully kept ones out there and, in my (albeit quite limited) experience, they're pretty bulletproof if properly serviced and are capable of large mileages without issue. Apparently, most of the ones with IMS bearing and bore scoring issues have now been fixed, and it only affected a relatively small number of cars anyway. For reputable specialists, I can heartily recommend Harbour Cars, in Chichester. They also offer an excellent years' warranty.

@gintonic regarding the M3, we'll agree to disagree, it's a marvellous drive and puts a big grin on your face everytime it takes to the road, arguably one of the greatest normally aspirated V8's ever produced?

^ your shortlist are such different cars. Maybe a 2015 Merc C63 not CLS63 but otherwise:
2016 Cayman 981
2018 BMW M2 Competition
But probably a 911. You might get a higher mileage Gen 2 997. Or get a 996 Turbo: not meh !
In fact the 997.1 turbos don't have those engine issues as they have the Mezger :).
