There's lots of chat about it on Audio Science Review. From what I have read it's not a question of better or worse but just slightly different. Each has its own pros and cons.
According to page 4 of the RME User's Guide if the serial number is followed by a "C" (as is the case of the unit in your photos) the chip is the ESS version rather than AKM.

As above, looking for SVS SB-1000 Pro or SB-3000 Micro subwoofer to be used for music (not AV) with small wall-mounted speakers in medium sized kitchen/breakfast area. Needs to be compact. Might also consider an REL T/5i or x series but the SVS subs has a bit more power and set-up flexiblity...
