    Naim CD3 vs CD5

You can also try modifying the original Naim top hat puck if it slips. I have a CDI and it had two top hat pucks, the one ring and two ring ones. The one ring puck sounds much superior, but doesn't allow track change in my player without awful noises. I modified one of the top hats so that I...

    Amp for Kans

If your Kans have the original Scanspeaks and they are working, I would not change them as there is no modern match available. The Linn D2008 is a modified unit and the coating is much heavier in the dome than in the new stock D2008. Hiquphon OW1 is a better match (and probably the better...

    Linn Kan B110B Driver Replacement

Actually nearly all Kans use a different material cabinets from LS3/5a. Only the very few early pairs have used the Chartwell plywood boxes (the legend says) and I've never seen those for sale anywhere. Then they used chipboard (I've had a very early 1979 pair which already had this material)...

    Linn Kan B110B Driver Replacement

Well, whatever Kans are they most certainly are not "knocked up in a couple of hours by bored Linn techies". I've never seen such care and attention put in a speaker box construction in what was basically entry-level speakers, especially the insides which are never even seen (matched veneers...

    Linn Kan B110B Driver Replacement

I once changed the original B110A units from my Kans to the new Falcon ones and I'm sorry to say the Falcons do not sound better. I even retrofitted all the Linn mods to the drivers, mainly the aluminium plates throughout the driver chassis (without them Kans do not sound quite right), but still...

Are Linn Kans and LS3/5As similar?

I guess the very first 100 or so pairs used plywood cabs, but I've not heard these. I also think their serial numbers were different from the standard line that started with chipboard cabs from 10xxx or so. The Kans after this were definitely chipboard and from serial 13xxx-14xxx or so they...

Are Linn Kans and LS3/5As similar?

Even different vintage mark 1 Kans sound very different depending on their serial numbers and as such their construction. Linn was constantly tinkering the speakers. The best Kans (I've had many many different mk 1 pairs) are the ones before the change from chipboard to mdf (from 1979-1980 or...

The resurrected 'things you sold then bought again' thread.

Same here, still looking for THE perfect pair.

    Royd Eden

I have Sapphires (quite similar to Edens but without steel lined cabinet walls) about 11-12cm from rear wall. Even tough they are rear ported they can go very close to back wall without any booming. They do not need any toe-in IMO, or maybe just a mm or two if you like. Open frame stands and...

    Oldest speaker in daily use?

My Linn Kans are from 1981 I think, but I do have Sonab OA-5 Type II speakers from 1970, which sound absolutely great with same vintage Tandberg receiver, but are not in daily use.

    Kan you name your favourite?

I guess the very first pairs were. I've seen few pictures of these. I don't think there were many pairs of these. I think their serial numbers were in line of 43/44 etc. unlike the 10400/10401 of later chipboard/mdf pairs.

    Kan you name your favourite?

I've just got the sixth pair of Kans I've had. Totally mint pair of black mk1 serial 15xxx. They sound very nice with all the good Kan qualities and really look like they were made yesterday, but I still sonically miss my 10xxx serial Kans. There was just something special about them even though...

    Isobarik drivers

I once tried replacing my original Kan scanspeaks with the new ferrofluid D2008 and it sounded all wrong. Then I used the Hiquphon OW1 and it matches the Kans very well (makes Kans sound more neutral and detailed), but it does sound bit different than the original Linn D2008. In retrospect I'd...

    Isobarik drivers

At least with Kans, even as late as 1985 (serials 31xxx) Linn used the SP1003 version of the B110. Linn did however do some small mods to their Kan B110s, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the same mods in Isobarik B110s. Also I do not think the stock Scanspeak D2008 tweeter matches the Linn...

Royd Sintra 2 info , if anyone knows...

If you mean the rubbery port material, it actually braces the bass driver to the rear of the box, so it is integral to the sound.
