    'Like' buttons

So because I refuse to use emoticons people reading my posts only get 10% of what I am trying to communicate? Probably no bad thing if I'm honest. Seeing the little balloon saying 'Brian likes this' makes me think of a toddler pointing at his friend and saying 'I like you...' - it seems to me...

    'Like' buttons

Because I asked myself why, if every writer in history up to that point had managed to communicate his thoughts accurately without using them, were they suddenly necessary? And my conclusions were that it came down to trivialisation, short attention spans and dumbing down. Everything we (or at...

Absolutely. Multi-quote is good though, look! I’ve never used those either. I think the introduction of smilies signalled the start of the world going to hell in a handcart. Of course not. A few things are far too important to joke about.

They are all certainly confusions and distractions. I read your post, put my iPad down and found myself wondering how Prince Philip had any knowledge of crack cocaine. Let alone what imsmc means although he is even older than me and I don’t have a clue.

But why bother anyway, unless you have something you want to add to the argument? What does it achieve? Solidarity? Ego massage?

    'Like' buttons

I’ve had an idea for those who use ‘like’ buttons as a time-saving device. By this time I’m sure Siri, Alexa and Google know everything about you - why not simply ask them to like every post that fits your profile for you? You could do it with a voice command while you are making the tea or...

All the more reason to have neither, I would say.

    'Like' buttons

Yes. I’m guessing that XenForo got the idea from Facebook. Although every time Tony tweaks the appearance of the site it looks less like a Steve Hoffman clone, there will inevitably be a strong resemblance - it would be nice to see a real chunk of individuality.

    'Like' buttons

But as has been pointed out already, liking something is not the same as agreeing with it. If I posted in the Fall thread “Mark E Smith looks really ill” I would be very surprised to find a lot of people clicking on a ‘like’ button in response. I would expect people to post ‘I agree’ or ‘Yes, I...

    Well done Tony

Please can someone tell me what 'New Profile Posts' is meant to be used for?

Not without justification, it has to be said... Far be it from me to deflect any glory from my fellow top-notch likee (we notable members must stick together) but please see post#15.

    'Like' buttons

I agree with Patrick, and I’m not going to press a ‘like’ button in order to show it.

That does sound as if it’s an obvious place to use them...

I’ve been trying to find the pun hidden in here for five minutes and have completely failed! Time to call it a night, obviously.
