    MDAC first listen (part X)

Hi Dominik/John, It was my unit that was having problems updating. At the moment with my current firmware, I don't have any problems retaining settings so I would imagine the mainboard and front panel software versions are stored without any errors, with consistent CRCs, is that right...

    Many thanks Dominik/John in advance...

    MDAC first listen (part X)

Hi John/Dominik, I noticed something odd which might be related to the front panel not updating - when resetting my settings (pressing both sel buttons when powering up) the settings are cleared. But if I then switch off (leaving the settings cleared) and on again, the settings revert to what...

Thanks John, much appreciated. Will wait to see what Dominik says about the update problem...

    MDAC first listen (part X)

John, Have tried updating with other firmware revisions and the updater software always stops after the mainboard with that message I mentioned (i.e. Replied '-' although on one occasion the - was a superscript 3 instead). Although I am using a different computer for the update than the one I...

    MDAC first listen (part IX)

Thanks John. Though please note I had exactly the same problem when re-flashing with the original v.099/.098 firmware (did not update the control)

    MDAC first listen (part IX)

Tried updating from v.99 to A.06. Mainboard updates and got the message Replied '-' after which the M-DAC display blanks out. Switching it back on, the revision was shown as v.099/vA.06 i.e. the control was not updated. I re-flashed with the 0.99/0.98 firmware and the same thing happened...

    MDAC first listen (part VII)

I measured the DC offset from my M-DAC (both headphones and RCA outputs) using a digital multimeter - between 2-3mV per channel for both sets of outputs. Pretty good I think!

    MDAC first listen (part VII)

Just in case anyone might be interested, and given my obsessive nature in general, I did some basic experiments with the M-DAC with the anomalous frozen high-level digital input from my STX sound card. I could have just measured the DC output from the M-DAC with a multimeter, but I don't have...

    MDAC first listen (part VII)

Thanks John. Wasn't implying the M-DAC was at fault for anything - just wanted to understand the situation of why other DACs wouldn't show a DC output. Now I understand the M-DAC deliberately avoids such things for SQ reasons which is a perfectly good reason. And yes it is pretty bad show for...

    MDAC first listen (part VII)

Hi John, Just FYI, after doing some research I found that the issue with the STX is known (sticks to the last observed bitpattern as you surmised) and has been observed before (found on http://www.stereophile.com/content/asus-xonar-essence-ststx-soundcards-follow-september-2010): "I was at...

    MDAC first listen (part VII)

Just one more thing John (sorry!) - if as you say there is nothing to protect the headphones (though the M-DAC), I presume this means that the M-DAC headphone amp does not have a AC coupling or DC offset feature? In this case, is there also a risk of degradation or damage to the M-DAC's...

    MDAC first listen (part VII)

Ah yes I see. Thanks for the explanation. I will just stick with USB until I can sort out the issue with the STX. Many thanks Krisposs

And that damage could occur at those volumes even without being able to hear anything through the speakers/headphones?

    MDAC first listen (part VII)

P.S. Sorry for all the questions - I am a little concerned about what damage I may have already caused by using the STX!
