What does it mean to you to be English?

Quoting his line 'if you don't love it, leave it'. You will agree that my stance is somewhat softer. This is why I wrote that I agreed to some extent. Most Merle Haggard's songs have past their sell-by date long ago, but a few lines can still be picked here and there. In musical terms I very...

What does it mean to you to be English?

The following - rather blunt - statement will not sound nice to some ears here, but I tend to agree with Merle Haggard to some extent. If you live in a country, start by abiding to its rules (i.e. observe the law). If you don't like these rules, and have a good reason not to like them, then...

What does it mean to you to be English?

Seen from the continent: - Great musicians, excellent choirs - Wonderful scenery, we love. - Cellars with very loud and good music and drunken youngsters - Excellent beer until 30ish years ago, readily available girls as well - Very in-your-face people compared to over-polite Swizzies - Funny...

Is our world becoming more cruel?

I am the youngest of five siblings, the eldest being born 16 years before me, and I have heard a lot about how things used to be handled inside families at that time. I find that as a whole, life was more cruel in the 60s and 70s, however glorified these decades might be today. And only...

Garys Economics (Basically economics for dummies)

Garys Economics (Basically economics for dummies)

A lot of this covid money has ended up in pockets where it shouldn't have. Tracing its whereabouts is a lost cause, and rock-hard assumptions from various writers are speculation at best. And speculation is the wrong approach for working with money. If you've got money to burn, then have fun...

Garys Economics (Basically economics for dummies)

This is why I'd rather trust old farts. At their stage they have past the age of 'gaming' and have learnt that there's no magic. Of course, when young, you can game like hell and hope for the best. If you're good, and lucky, it might even work out. But doing this without a solid amount of...

Garys Economics (Basically economics for dummies)

I struggle imagining George Soros or Warren Buffett bragging about their wealth. And they know a thing or two. This would make me wary all the more. Should I ever buy a book about economics, the quality mark I would look at is the author's hair. Grey is not enough, it must be white.

    War declared, Israel v Palestine...

Did he really say this ? That the rich own all the media is as old as media itself, and it certainly was that way long before Einstein.

    Bugs Beemer

I certainly prefer a dull Mondeo to a yucky Pontiac Aztec. Or an X7, which has the refined touch of a 70s Wartburg. But when you look at the furniture and decoration of Donald Trump's penthouse, you come to the conclusion that elegance is not always a top priority for the guys who carry the money.

My reason would be that it’s not that profitable after all.

    Killing field day this Saturday

Take once place at a long table with jockeys or showjumpers, and listen to their stories, especially those about 'others'. Then you will know. I have to say that a good 30 years have passed since I heard this, I hope mentalities/regulations have evolved since. This topic has been subject of...
