My wife enjoys her sounds as much as I do :-)
The speakers are line dipoles so there is little reflected energy and it doesn't sound 'boxy' or 'echo-ey'. There are low level CD shelves on one side and records on the other side; the start of the CD ones can be seen on the right of the picture...
The silver box provides an appropriate seat from which to cue records :-)
I have tidied up since the photo and record deck sits directly on the stand with the power supplies moved to a shelf below
There is a Van den Hul MC10 (I think, from memory) going online (may be Emporium - I'll confirm if you are interested) with a new diamond for £500. Fantastic little cartridge
So I nominate the Infinity IRS V. If you want a new loudspeaker, the Avantgarde Trios. If you want a new British speaker, probably the B&W 600 diamond, but only if they get some bass reinforcement.
The rest are toys. You know, for kids.
+1 for Infinity, though I'd put the IRS I as the best...
I second the suggestions re big JBLs, Infinity (used to have a pair of RS IIbs) and Kef
You do not need dinner plate drivers for deep, deep bass - I have a pair of Genesis 350s which have 4* 8" drivers per speaker and these have active amplification AND equalisation to keep bass tight

Re Mike R's comment: I have an SME V on an Avid with a VdH Colibri and it works very well. It is critical to get vte dialled in right as it will sound splashy if this is not the case
+1 for SME V :-)
