On holiday in Blackpool

Indeed! And quite a few fishies.... and gruaniad readers... all of whom would do, "well just anything darlings for those lovely BLM and simply charming Pride organisers"... but when faced with the much greater need of the unemployed lower working class people (with tattoos!) who are about to lose the roof over their head... "oh do hurry along Nigel, Cynthia, get away from THOSE people"
Calm down, Fat Slags actually got slated by Guardian feminists. It represents what is going on in Blackpool pretty well.

And how we laughed at that but we are not allowed to laugh at tourists in Blackpool?

liverpool just lost theirs for modern developments ... dread to think what they would think of this place !!!!
I don’t think UNESCO were happy with the building of The Museum of Liverpool a few years ago and have been looking for an excuse ever since.

Nothing like a bit of assertion sans evidence to make generalised unsubstantiated comments. The only Nigel I know is Farage! I think you will find many in the middle classes with tattoos...I am working class...and don't have a tattoo....However if you want to extol a mythical saintly working class... don't let me stop you.

There's also Nigel Blackwell of the mighty HMHB. I don't know whether he qualifies as working class, but his mother worked in the same factory as my father.

The only Nigel I knew as a nipper was Nigel Stonehouse, and all I can remember about him was that he had sticky-out ears.

My mother was born in Blackburn, and Blackpool was the seaside resort of choice for her when she was young. As a family we went to Blackpool for a holiday in the early ‘sixties - I was eight so saw nothing of the night life - I loved it there. Saw Joe Brown and The Searchers (my first gigs!) and a play that starred the inimitable Hylda Baker.
I’ve been back twice since, just for a few hours in the daytime, in the spring, and it was wonderful to relive my youth walking along the Golden Mile, although the entire front seemed to be shouting at me. I recall reading that Blackpool receives eight million visitors a year, which, given the amount of car parks near the front, doesn’t surprise me.
I’d not want a holiday there now as our tastes are more towards countryside than town, beyond city breaks in Europe.

Mick

It's definitely interesting to see how folks on here can abuse people so very easily with such heroic snobbery and then chuckle together like a group of public school boys...

The confectionery describes any one who approves of this thread. Change Blackpool for Brighton and "lower working class" for gay and see how you get on then.

We don't agree on pretty much anything Hi-Fi related, but I whole heartedly agree with you on this one. Much like the 2nd home thread. I actually never knew how far up their own arses many of the members are on here till these threads!

'Chips and Chaps', the new musical based on a pfm thread. Starring that bloke who's on the telly a lot, and the bitter ex-soap star who thought she could move on and do something different.

PS Is Jez an abbreviation of Jeremy? That would be dead funny.

I'm enjoying the 'I'm more working-class than what you are' and 'the chip on my shoulder's bigger than the chip on yours, pal' vibes.
Well, my suggested four day escorted tour of Hadrian’s Wall (three star hotel price based on two sharing) got dissed early on.

I don’t think UNESCO were happy with the building of The Museum of Liverpool a few years ago and have been looking for an excuse ever since.

They’ve been given plenty since then! I know a fair few people who are very annoyed about the loss of World Heritage Status. There has been a lot of dodgy stuff going on in Liverpool property development as long as I can remember.

I am sure Richardg is a clever chap so I can’t help think he started this thread to be provocative.

Feeling superior to those around you is a dangerous game. What if you or one of your family has a sudden medical emergency whilst out and about in Blackpool - are you going to refuse help from a stranger who says they are a nurse because they have tattoos and a northern accent.

BTW I am from Middlesbrough. Go find Jeff Stirlings epic diatribe on a survey that put the Boro as the worst place in England to live.

A friend of ours did that Hadrian's Wall walk, in bare feet*. Now that's hardcore.

* Not because he can't afford boots, but because he's a nutttaaaaahhhhh!

Back in the day, I worked for Rediffusion TV before going to uni. They had a great training centre in Poulton le Fylde and I went there several times. They put us up in B&B accommodation in Blackpool and we had a ball!
After that, I got into TVR's and was a regular visitor to Bristol Avenue for a few years, often stopping in sea front hotels. The Trafalgar on the outskirts of Blackpool was TVR's canteen of choice. Picked up a new convertible from the factory one year and spent a few hours there with the guys. My first wife had to drive to us my parents in Hull as I was gone with the fairies, courtesy of Boddingtons finest.

Agreed Tony, I got a shock at the state of Lime st and The Strand after going over from Wirral after the first “lockdown” never mind what had been going on for years as you say. I don’t think however that there are many people that visit due to World Heritage status and equally I don’t think it’s loss will put people off. I’m a 61 year old native of Wavertree and I’m still proud of the place warts and all.

Cool, I knew Wavertree, Smithdown Rd etc quite well back in the ‘80s. Went to loads of student house parties etc in that area! At that time I lived in a crap flat in Fairfield/Kensington, which was pretty rough (got some amazing records from Kenny Market, Duke Box, Musical Box etc though). I later ended up in Catherine St behind the big cathedral and later still bought a flat on Victoria St down by the museum, library, St George’s Hall etc. I definitely miss the place, but it made sense to sell-up and move somewhere where I could afford to buy a house outright, so I did that.
