Ban on petrol and diesel cars from 2030

Nothing is certain, but I am pretty sure that few of Johnson's 'green crap' (as Cameron called it) plans will be in place by 2030.

I think it's good that the manufacturers now have a target to work towards. That gives around 2-3 generations of battery tech to settle, so I don't think range anxiety will be such an issue. But the power infrastructure of this country needs a good seeing-too. It used to be a worry when people put the kettle on during the adverts in the evening, but now it's plugging the car into the fast charger when they get home from work. Or are we all going to be WFH from now on?

Not an issue ATM.

If they can produce an EV that:

- Doesn't make me a victim of 1984. Meaning the manufacturer/govermnent/far east state doesn't keep checking where/how/what I'm driving. Won't happen. Sad, as I dreamt of having a EV since the sixties.
Sadly RJ I expect it will be the opposite, cashew nose keeps promising more money to everyone and having said motoring will be used to help pay (e.g. more tolls) I won’t be surprised to see car telemetry used to charge a fee per mile and the tech would enable them to know if we used lanes, B-roads or premium M or A roads. They could have different unit charges accordingly. It would all have the interesting result of sending us 100+ years backwards in staying local and travelling become an occasional thing unless essential.

watching a very good canal boat programme the other night , as they went past a london area with a 52% rise in occupancy and thousands upon thousands in high rise flats , i wonder how they will charge up their vehicles !

That will short out the terminals and make your tongue go all zingy

I've heard some Hybrid Buses have been suffering from big puddles after recent heavy rain.

Apparently, Radio Calls were made advising drivers to take it easy as there had been a few breakdowns.

:D

My experience of dense living in London is that very few people have cars. I rented one when I needed it.
I now lease an electric car. I'm lucky in that in Milton Keynes next door there are literally hundreds of charging points. If I need to charge I park at a fast charger and go for a run, or go shopping. There's no range anxiety and I've saved about £600 on a home charger that would cost only slightly less in energy usage. If I had home solar I would definitely charge at home.

Here in socialistic Sweden we even had such a system, though much simpler, in the 1970-80's for diesel cars. It was just a mechanical thing that counted the miles traveled and was inspected once a year by som authority followed a by a bill from the tax man.

I wouldn't mind going back 55 years, though. Free speed and a brand new Porsche 912! Or an Elan. Or an E-type.

They'll have to pry the keys out of my cold dead hands!

Does anyone know in depth how the Swiss system works?
I remember having to buy a vignette to be able to use the motorway network. I could see that working in the UK.

In Asia any decent flat has dedicated car parking spaces underneath. We have 60 floor blocks in KL these days
The UK has not figured out how to do good hi-rise for some reason.

People generally don't want them. Everyone has the dream of their own house and their own front door with a little garden out back. Flats have poor memories for most people as cheap council or tenement blocks with failed lifts and urine filled stairwells.
