Track Car Suggestions

How about RX8! Provided you’re prepared to take on the engine maintenance requirements that these cars WILL ask of you, you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic chassis and and engine that revs for days, if it’s not going to be daily driven, an example with a recent rotor tip replacement should last you a few years before needing doing again.

Good call; plenty out there that have been looked after and maintained properly etc... Frequent oil changes keep the engines ticking over nicely; they do like to use a bit of oil.

Sound superb on full chat too :D

My pal has 2 of them, they both make him worry every time he goes to start them haha
My cousin is a very experienced mechanic, he bought his for scrap money with low compression and burning oil... he pulled the engine, stripped it himself and took the rotors to a specialist for refurbishment, the cost wasn’t high and because he did the rest himself, he got a fully sorted RX8 for very little money, plus a few evenings in the garage. If you can do the engine pulling and stripping yourself, they’re a pretty safe bet. Rotaries do need rebuilds every 60k (give or take a few k) but that’s expected and you cost it into ownership, they don’t have some of maintenance requirements that many reciprocating piston engines do though. I love E60/92 M5/3s but I’d be more nervous about the potential repair bill for one of those than a rotary.

Yeah; my pals a motorsport mechanic himself; so soon has them out and in pieces... Fantastic engine though; always fancied an RX8; alas, another car on my 'can't fit in it' list  :D

Yup; a wrong'un M3 or M5 now will set you back near enough the cars value! Another car that you have to buy with your head and that's after you've had the owner under a bright light and sweating at your list of questions...!

Yes, luckily it's great to drive. Have spent 4+ hours crouched in the boot this weekend. Have it figured out now.
Could’ve been worse, I’ve spent a similar amount of time doing similar in me neighbour’s caravan... I know that sounds dodgy , so to be clear, I was repairing his fridge and replacing a smashed consumer unit/charger box.:D

In my wealthier days I had an e92 M3, easily the best all round car I’ve owned, genuinely amazing to drive and genuinely daily drivable, gorgeous looking inside and out too... I’d banked on having it with minimum depreciation and repair risk, got it at a couple of years old with very low mileage, then some twat tried to overtake me on the A5 at high speed where the road narrowed from two to one lane, clipped the barrier, and spun right into my path, totally decimating my front end and blowing the airbags, the insurance wrote it off, thought about buying it back and fixing it, but I didn’t buy a near new, low mileage car with warranty to get into that hassle, so bought a Volvo s60 T5R instead, and promptly got beaten with a crowbar in a robbery and my car taken... I was done with high performance daily drivers then... well until I bought my Golf R32, but then I ended up with a GTI anyway because of being worried about putting miles on the R32 and churning through petrol... I’ve sold the R32 but still have the GTI, which owes me nothing... and if the engine pops in that (very unlikely), I can easily pick up a 1.8 20VT cheap... hmmm, there’s another idea for the OP, Leon Cupra? Possibly on the heavy side but pretty rapid and bits are readily available and cheap!

Go MX-3. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202006190311545

£1500.

That has to be worthy of interest to petrolheads in the long run at the very least for the fact that it is a 1.8l V6 surely (never mind the claim that it will outrun an MX5) ??

Yes, I was surprised when I saw it was a V6 !!

RX8 is a great suggestion. 20 mpg is bad news, on the road but on track you won't care because normal cars are down to teens and on a track who cares?

I was tempted by one when I lived in France, used cars there are hugely expensive but because this was "exotic" nobody wanted it it was dirt cheap. I already had 3 cars at that time and chose to cycle to work, so I left it. Shame.

Strip out the seats, days burning off the sound deadening, fitting a full cage and suspension & brakes... Buy one already done...unless you want to do the prep - I know that’s part of the fun for some...I’m Ok messing with the ECU, but prefer not to get my hands dirty :)

Yes, the Cayman keeps me busy enough so happy to buy something ready to rock and hopefully just have to change brake pads and fluids ...

If I had done everything I'd wanted with the Cayman I'd probably sell it and get an Exige like yours @-alan- and kill two birds with one stone.

The latest 20th Anniversary Exige 410 look amazing but mega bucks.

A friend of mine did put a turbo in a 1990 Volvo 740 station wagon with an in line 4 cylinder engine, I think it’s a 2 liter.
Seriously, at first I laughed at him with his square edges family car knowing he’s too old to have some kids.....
But when he showed me a video of him driving his long square car on a zig zag track, I was shocked !
The road handling is awesome even when he takes a curve on two wheels only.
He had the car for peanuts and he found some used racing parts so at the end, it was very affordable.
He used to be a chief crew of formula Ford in the past so he for sure knows how to get the best out of it.
