Bands that changed...for the worse

He does, and I've even seen a video of Meyer playing Wolf, which is probably like touching the Holy Grail :). But as I said, for me the rest of the band aren't bringing anything new anymore.

That’s true, but it’s not a bad effort given their age, and Bob Weir is still pretty decent.

The basic problem is that bands/artists go on for too long. The Beatles are the template 6-7 years then done. Beginning, middle & end.

As soon as a group loses key members they are done. A prime example of this would be Fairport Convention, who cares once Thompson & Denny have left?

Agree, in many ways it’s sad to see a band rumble on under the Fairport brand, knocking out album after album that parodies the truly great legacy. In other ways it gives the musicians a living, and it’s difficult to criticise that?

Porcupine Tree. 'Voyage 34' is ace, everything after does nothing for me at all.

That’s sort of where I am with them too. A few albums came in with a trade a while back and I liked the white vinyl double of Voyage 34 enough to keep it. It’s hugely derivative, e.g. the guitar riff on side one is a straight lift of Floyd’s Another Brick In The Wall, but I like the kind of tripped-out Orb feel to it all and it is a great sounding record. None of the other stuff I tried (can’t remember the album names, but at least three of them) made the slightest impression.

Playing live is all they have now, royalties are dwindling. There is a basic iniquity when it comes to song writing credits that doesn’t really reflect the overall band contribution.

Bowie after Aladdin Sane
Bowie reinvented himself so many times during his career and understandably not all changes (pun intended) were to everyone's liking.
There are several albums after Aladdin Sane that for me were brilliant pieces of work - Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, Low and of course the quite magnificent Blackstar which given the circumstances was nothing short of remarkable.

The Cure after Pornography (with a brief return to form for Disintegration).

No love for 'Bloodflowers', the third album in 'the Trilogy'?

New Order after Low Life.

Yeah, 'Brotherhood' is a bit of a letdown but 'Technique' is much stronger; hated it at the time but it's a grower. Odd singles aside ('Regret', 'Crystal') a bit of a downward trajectory since.

Ride after their first LP.

Apart from 'Seagull' I can't get into that first album; 'Going Blank Again' is a much stronger cut and one of the albums of the 90s IMHO. What followed was toilet.

Siousxie and the Banshees after McGeoch left.

I should like 'Hyaena', given it contains a lot of Fat Bob but it leaves me cold. 'Tinderbox', however, is a return to form (even if they are copying all of the goth bands that were inspired by them) and 'Candyman' is a bit of a stoater with of the greatest 'goth' guitar patterns ever.

Examples?

There are bands that only had one album - Sex Pistols, Jeff Buckley spring to mind. There is a multitude of also rans, but the great bands are great precisely because they had the ability and support to make multiple albums, but even say Dire Straits (to name a massive band for the sake of argument) never bettered their initial effort from a musical perspective.

There's also what sounds like a Peter Hammill sample in there (the flute from 'In the Black Room')

@vince rocker

The Dead after America Beauty are better than most bands entirely. They have my vote and I don’t even like the hippy BS.

I can't stand the dead and I am a "freak" who ticks every box for "gotta be a dead head"... it's all the endless noodling without any tune or ever going anywhere that I can't stand!

Queen stopped being a serious rock band after 'Sheer Heart Attack' ('Brighton Rock' is a real rocker of a track). There were occasional moments where they proved they could still do the business, like this:

But they became few and far between. I guess being surrounded by so muck dreck, it made the occasional good one shine.

Later peter Gabriel stuff, after the So album maybe, nothing really does it for me. Also I think his voice has gone.
His first 3 or 4 albums are so much better ( for me) than his more recent stuff.
Gabriel's best work was with Genesis.
I have most of his solo output - never listen to it.Selling England & The Lamb however.............
