Winter election II

I do actually get out into the real world quite often and I’ve been predicting a Tory/Brexit victory for years based on my feedback from people in pubs.

But I still find this level of ignorance surprising, and the fact that it lends itself so naturally to the Tory/Brexit disaster vote, quite depressing

This is the problem Labour have. They think of those who don't have Momentum in their blood as ignorant/thick/racist.
Those people are the voters.

It's all the more depressing because there is no great love for Johnson outside of blue rinse Tories and some kippers who can't think past getting out of the EU, very far from it. But this disconnect between what activists think the centre vote should get behind and what they actually will support is enormous. We can keep blaming the audience but just maybe the message and/or messenger is the obstacle.

In this unfortunate pissing contest I'm going to claim that I'm even more depressed than you. Not only do I think Labour will lose heavily this time but the mechanisms now in place post Millepede will almost certainly result in repeating the folly of electing a leader who will not broaden the offering beyond activists once again.
How far towards a world view that can’t see beyond a Daily Mail headline do you have to lean to get to the centre ground

We’re all doomed. Johnson will win by a landslide.

Yesterday I was stopped in my local by someone who’d noticed my ‘Vote Labour’ posters in the window of my house. I made some joke about having plenty of spares that I’d be happy to bring round for him and attempted to move off as frankly, I wasn’t in the mood. But then came the inevitable, ‘Corbyn’d see this country go down the pan’ nonsense. That was easily dealt with by a few facts, but then came the ‘yes buts’ until we got onto the ‘so called austerity’. This guy didn’t believe that austerity had happened. It was all some sort of lefty propaganda thing. I was knocked back and spluttered something about him not living in the real world and walked off before I spoke my mind in more Anglo Saxon terms

Oh God I’m depressed.
Don’t be, you been trolled, that’s all. Twice, now that the good doctor has chipped in. The need to demoralise others is essential to the Tory mentality. Very painful to them to imagine that others might be experiencing hope, compassion etc.

I think if you can't see the massive scope between those positions, there is little hope. You sound like you wish for no change and the votes to just arrive. That's fine, it's a point of view.

Nonsense. Nobody I know believes that at all, but someone who believes austerity hasn’t happened is not living in the real world. The fact of the matter is that this incident did get to me, I’ve watched Education get slashed over the years. As a head of department I had a budget of £2800 when I started and the ability to apply for money for investments into, for example, a printing press. I could offer a curriculum that include clay, modelling, print, etching and get in outside artists.

Before I left, my budget had been cut to £600. Printing inks, glazes etc had to go. Providing a varied range of options for my kids became more and more difficult.

Austerity for me was very real and very personal

I hope you're wrong but it wouldn't surprise me if you're right.

Stepdaughter is type 1 diabetic. This morning she put some right wing propaganda on her Facebook about why the NHS is failing, and when I saw it I couldn't believe my eyes. Talk about signing your own death warrant.

Welcome to the real world outside the echo chamber of PFM.

The Understanders of real voters have logged on.

FFS! Even Boris Johnson admits that a) austerity was real and b) was a bad idea!

The London Bridge thing should certainly help focus minds on Tory ‘austerity’ and the impact of cutting the police, prison and legal system beyond useful purpose. Yes, the police reacted fast to the ongoing incident, but the person clearly shouldn’t have been walking around with a tag and a huge knife. That’s an epic fail, and it is almost certainly down to Tory cuts in core state infrastructure.

According to the Poll of Polls the Tories lead has been cut quite considerably. Down to about 12 I think. I do not think any Party is going to have a working Majority. There is going to be a lot of horse trading after the 12th IMHO.

Yes, my reaction was a little, er...

It should, however, I can just imagine my ‘man in the pub’ thinking, if that’s the right word, that we need a ‘strong leader’ in times like this.

Not to mention the 'Corbyn the terrorists' mate' meme being exploited for all its worth.

Wasn’t it Corbyn who released him from prison and bought the fake suicide vest for him? Newsnight feature with a backdrop of minarets and Corbyn clamping a Bowie knife between his teeth?

In any sane world a duplicitous coward and bare-faced liar such as Johnson, a man who has run away from every moral responsibility in his exceptionally privileged life, considers his elite background places him above both scrutiny and the law, and will say anything no matter how batshit crazy for immediate personal gain would be seen as anything but a ‘strong leader’. By saying that, Corbyn...

PS For clarity: Corbyn is clearly the better human being, and by any measurement, but still a shit leader.

never follow your close ones on social networks, those are the people you love

Poor Boris was just 31 when he wrote it. How could he have been expected to know better when he was just 31? 31-year-olds can't be expected to know what they are writing.

Fair point. Mine was a self-reflective one, apropos of nothing. A Fri eve Malbec Moment.

I make no excuses for BJ.
