System pics 2013 part I

Temporary turntable situation (Gyro/RB251/DL110) whilst awaiting the rather protracted servicing of the 301.

Lynx Hilo DAC/ADC arrived last autumn.

No other changes since 2011 and none expected.

John, looks great. You prefer the Garrard to the Gyro?

Interesting question. I've not heard them A/B'd in this system, so when the 301 eventually returns I will compare them with the same arm/cartridge. However, when I got the 301 - with the 251/DL110 in a decent but tatty plinth, the comparison with the Gyro - which had an SME IV/AT33PTG suggested that the 301 was a hell of a deck. Then I got a slate plinth built and transferred the SME... It seemed like a no brainer at the time. We'll see!

I've decommissioned the semi-active E-Xs and reverted to a simpler set-up so I can accommodate my vintage Pioneer electronics.

The left stack comprises:

Linn LP12 (pre-Cirkus) with Geddon, Khan, ARO, Greenstreet and Lyra Kleos into DV P-75
Densen B-400XS CD player
Densen B-250 preamplifier
Densen B-350 x 2 mono amplifiers

The right stack comprises:

Pioneer PL-71 (no cart presently, but probably an Ortofon 2M of some colour)
Pioneer C-21 preamplifier
Pioneer M-22 class-A amplifier

The "modern" stack drives my favourite Ergo loudspeaker system, the E-IIIR comprising Hiquphon OW1, Seas M15CH001 and Scan-speak 25W8565-01 in a sealed enclosure.

That Pioneer M22 is a beauty! Love the design!
I've always coveted one ever since I heard it over 30 years ago. It's a purist function leading form design. This one is fully restored with new caps, trim-pots and power transistors.

Hopefully you won't hold it against me the fact I own AVI products. I've had the ADM40s for about 9 months and couldn't be happier with them. Not much to take a photo of, as the system is just a Squeezebox Touch and ADM40s.

Very nice, I've always fancied one of those M-22s, only thing puts me off these big old Class A beasts is the amount it can cost should it need servicing/repairing.

It's a fully discrete design and there is a comprehensive service manual that lists every part. Some components are now obsolete, but you should be able to find modern equivalents. It's certainly easier to service than my Densen amps with SMT parts smaller than a grain of rice.

I'm loving the low box count in your system.

Very nice.
That's what I call a woofer surround!

TOP MAN!!

I love AVI stuff. I have a pair of the Trios at the moment and I desperately wanted to try a pair of yours but cash was not available.

They look good, I like the simple straight forward lines.

Wouldn't worry about the haters here, they spend so much time clenching buttocks and scrunching their panties they hardly have time for music.

I hope there are still some 40's available when cash arrives again.

Its odd to have stands costing more then the speakers -- again.

The MEGs were too good as little used secondary speakers (ideal primaries in a small living room) but only occupied the last 5% of my time doing stereo check-mixes. Better use of studio funds. Perfect for near field and more forgiving of point source nonlinearity than the ADAM A5X

Many hate HS10s, which is why I was interested as I found haters are, in almost every instance, wide of the mark.

Hi Gromit,
get serious, go back to Exposure! :D

:D

Most people know I won't have a bad word said about Exposure but these Sony amps are absolutely superb. The 770ES reminds me somewhat of my old IVDR - that feeling of having loads in reserve and a sheer sense of gravitas to its sound. Bass that hits really hard yet with not one ounce of bloom - just how it should be imho. :)

I'm just glad our nearest neighbour's house is over 30 yds away (as I'm sure they are too). :D
