The watch thread: pocket, wrist, sporty, showy? You name it!

I hadn’t really taken any notice of Oris (I suppose blanket bombing had forced other brands into my head) when many years ago I mate showed me his with a sort of Milanese strap at the same time as his Royal Oak and Rolex Datejust. The Rolex was just a bigger version of my own (long since sold) and I was too ignorant on horology to appreciate the AP but I particular remember the Oris strap, possibly the best by my simple preferences that I have tried even to this day.

I'm not impressed with AP myself as many years ago I was lucky enough to get a new Off Shore Diver on a bracelet. When a went to pick it up
The clasp wouldn't close correctly so the dealer bent it in front of me and got it to close ok ( that should of be a warning) , next when you undid the crown it made a strange noise so after a week or two I sent it back to be fixed , next the time keeping was around 12+ sec a day so I sent it back and again 4 week later I got it back. They had improved the time keeping but only to 9+ so I complained and was told not really it will get better just give it some time. After a month I sent it back when I when I came to pick it up I was told by the AD that AP had sent it back but untouched and said that their watches are not COSC rated and so 9+ a day is perfectly acceptable.
So I sold it and got a Rolex and never looked back

These are nice to watch (there are several):

The Oris people just at the bottom of the hill where I live restoring battered watches.

Thats a great video but I'd be shoot if I handled the dial without finger cots, and interesting he cleans the main plate
with the stem in place

Don’t use Watchfinder. They are the Music Magpie of watches. Do you have a local bricks and mortar jewellers? Often they will come up with good offers, but obviously less than retail. I can recommend a couple in the South, but depends where you are.

Wonderful. I find that surprisingly soothing and relaxing to watch.

Could be down to the fact that my version of mechanical activity involves much cursing and swearing at bstd seized nuts and bolts that refuse to part company with crusty old motorcycles and much grazing of knuckles - whereas that is like watching a mechanical surgeon at work. :)

As an aside - I do remember seeing a Honda technician examining the teeth on a gearbox on one of the factory bikes at the NW200 with a loupe back in the day.

Thanks Nero. I’m in SW Scotland. I bought the watches in Edinburgh a few years back , but that particular store is not interested in buying them again, claiming the makes as ‘less commercial’ (a Breguet and a Blancpain).

I tended to agree after my experience with Watchfinder in December, selling my Navitimer. However......
I also tried Chrono Hunter, another similar dealer, 2 independent high end jewellery/ watch specialists and 2 auction houses that regularly sell good watches.
So, back to Watchfinder but this time discussing the sale over the phone. Watchfinder ended up way higher than all the others. The independents and Chrono Hunter were over £1K less!
One independent was owned by the stepson of my last GF. He told me that it wasn't easy selling watches in retail right now and told me to go for their offer!

I was passing by a pawn shop a few weeks ago and they were selling a Navitimer D23322 for £3200 or something like that and they reduced it in price to £2550 as part of their January sales.

I was tempted for sure as it's the right style of Navitimer. I asked about it and did some research. I went back and asked about year of manufacture as apparently you can tell by markings on the case and the woman said there was nothing on the case or inside to indicate year of manufacture. Suffice to say I walked away. Even if it's been verified as being genuine, which the woman said their horologists have said is the case, the fact it could be two years ago or twenty years ago was a red flag. Shame, it was a nice watch for sure.

Are you sure that it's not in code and/or she is mistaken? Most manufacturers have some kind of marking to help with spare parts identification etc, generally down to year and month or week number. A favourite is to hide this alongside some other number so that it's not obvious that (say) 18A indicates January 2018 or 1803 indicates the third week of 2018. I know that this is a favourite in food, typically we use a Julian calendar so today, the 8th day of 2024, is either 4008 or 24008. As this year is a Leap Year we have the joy of 29th Feb being 4366, preceded by 4059 and followed by 4060. Unless someone is being perverse or stupid and making 29 Feb code 4060 which pushes out your calendar for the rest of the year and just invites someone in the factory to screw it all up.

The best info I could find online was that it would be marked on the case between the lugs at 6 o'clock, but there was nothing there. The fact she said their own horologists couldn't find anything to date the watch tells me I've no chance of working it out.

As far as I can tell, it's the same as this 41/42mm Navitimer:

That's the site that let me know about the marking o the case, unfortunately, there are no such markings on the case in question.

The new Swatch Fifty Fathoms will be released tomorrow.

Sorry about the gigantic photo.

I like this black version far more than the pastel coloured versions already released.

I've got to see one of these in the flesh.

Not limited in production numbers apparently, so maybe not a target for flippers.
