malfunction://orouboros -- my new EP

Fox

The sound of one hoof clopping

malfunction://ouroboros is an EP derived from a performance work I developed and perform. I'm looking into making a limited run of 12" Vinyl EPs as an artefact -- but giving it away under a creative commons license.

I currently make soundscapes of drone/dark ambient, deep environment music using a collage of natural and processed samples from private recordings and binaural field recordings to tell a story about a fabled world not entirely unlike what our own might be after an interregnum following global collapse. No synthetic sounds were used -- just an awful lot of processing using Plogue Bidule, a few granular synthesis tools and some custom tools written using max:msp and Supercollider.

Live, I use a lot of subsonics and odd microtonal formants to create certain effects so this won't work through computer speakers or iPods. The longest files are too large for me to upload as WAVs but the MP3s here are reasonable, 1st gen live mixes and correctly EQed for home listening.

5 tracks. Just me. Released this Solstice past.

Hope you like the journey.

(As requested, a full set of FLACs are downloadable here (120MB).

Interesting stuff, Fox. At work, so will check it out this evening and will get back to you on it. Thanks for making it available.

I like what you are doing here. I like the way you throw no life-lines out at all, keeping it completely uncompromising hard-core.

I've been listening to a lot of Biosphere over the past couple of weeks and even that makes compromises for accessibility in some places, whereas this doesn't at all. Really excellent - I've downloaded them for my ipod.

You are, of course, completely insane.

Mmmm droney goodness, now residing in my iTunes. Just needs some cover art, it's nekkid!

Tony.

I Like. Fits quite nicely with my current listening habit (Kreng, Xela, William Fowler Collins, Taiga Remains). Not played it on big speakers yet but I'd be interested in vinyl if you do decide to press it up.

I will wait until Valerie Singleton tells me it is safe to download is it.

Srsly Nick, well done.

DS

Thanks all. Srsly. The vinyl is going ahead. Probably limited to ~500 to sell at gigs and online (hopefully via specialists).

Context: Life changed massively. After 9 years the solitude was doing me in; while my partner does her PhD, I moved to London looking for work but accepted a BA Hons degree course in Sonic Arts at Uni instead so I'm devoting 3 years of study in London towards making sounds, composing, building installations, developing sound software, performing and developing what I'm trying to achieve. The Neubauten reenactment @ the ICA gig really kicked me back into creative mode.

So, between attending lectures, tutorials, recording and whatnot, I've plenty of opportunity for being social and to perform work (I've taken it to London, Barcelona and Trondheim and looking to go further afield) -- the tabletop experimentalist scene is vibrant and I think very healthy.

I'm a student again! Gosh, I never saw it coming...

Cool, put me down for one, and I'll happily stock some here in the shop if you like.

Tony.

Finished a track I had difficulty completing ; it's not part of the main compositional arc but is related. Not performed live (only got the frog recording from friends holidaying in Hawaii last week!). You can download a 320Kbps MP3 here. (All are here at archive.org: http://www.archive.org/details/malfunctionoroboros).

A gig is being arranged in London (prob first or last weekend in September/October). Venue TBA in collaboration with a few fellow experimental laptop/controllerists. I'll update news of this when I have a date and a venue.

Finally got around to listening to this and found it to be right up my street, so to speak. Very good fox. A vinyl copy would be much appreciated here as well. Good luck with your project.

Ok. The live experience. You really need to hear this going through a PA and to submit to waves of sound rearranging you internally; however I mixed a live track which I've added. This is the beginning and a much much darker part of the malfunction://ouroboros cycle set. This is In effect where it all begins. The point just before trip and fall into global collapse. This was developed from the ground up to be a performance piece, with a distinct set of phases that overlap and with conditions that cannot start until certain conditions are met.

As usual, available for free download: http://soundcloud.com/senster/sets/interregnum-suites feel free to redistribute, copy, share, give away, stun mammals with...

Not thinking about vinyl on this until the first one is out.
