Favourite line from a song

Not a big fan of Stephen Patrick Morrissey but I found myself quoting him in conversation to the kids the other day:

"Its so easy to laugh, its so easy to hate: It takes guts to be gentle and kind"

Always liked Vini Reilly's take on the recording industry too:

"I don't believe in stardom, machinery in action,
Same old order, same old order"

Good authors too who once knew better words,
Now only use four letter words
Writing prose, Anything Goes.

You've got opinions and judgements
about all kinds of things
that you know nothing about

"I got confused
I killed a nun
I can't help the way I feel
I lost my bag in Newport Pagnell"

Aurora borealis the icy sky at night
Paddles cut the water in a long and hurried flight

Fabulous opening to Pochohontas by Neil Young

Lorenz Hart on falling in love:

"I'm wild again! Beguiled again! A simpering, whimpering child again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered am I."

Smokey Robinson on falling in love:

"Just like push can turn to shove, like can turn to love"

Johnny Mercer on the difficultly of being in love:

"But this torch that I found
Its gotta be drowned
Or it soon might explode"

Randy Newman on Lester Maddox:

"Well he may be a fool but he's our fool"

Foreign Affair, Tom Waits

without fear of contradiction bon voyage is always hollered
in conjunction with a handkerchief from shore
by a girl that drives a rambler and furthermore
is overly concerned that she won't see him anymore

The rest of it is just as good...

Ultimate put down:

'I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you...'

Dylan. Positively 4th Street.

"Now I smash up the telly with remains of the broken phone" - Ivor Cutler on Robert Wyatt:Little Red Robin Hood Hit The Road

"This is the coastal town that they forgot to close down.
Armageddon - come Armageddon! Come, Armageddon! Come!"

Oh I'm feeling cheerful today.

By the look of the lyrics quoted, nothing remarkable has been written over the last 5-10 years or so?
Dylan, Costello, Jackson, Bragg, Wyatt, Waits etc all from a good while ago now.
So is this an indication of the PFM Demographic or an indication of the lost art of lyrical songwriting?
Matt.

Most of the stuff I've bought over the last 5 years or so has been reissues.

However, I commented to OH on hearing the latest Rod Stewart single via the radio the other day that, lyrically, it was a big steaming pile of poo. Here's the last couple of verses;

She makes me happy, can you understand
She makes me happy, I'm a reborn man
She shows me loving is a wonderful thing
She makes me happy, I wanna sing, sing, sing

She makes me happy, can you understand
She makes me happy, I'm a reborn man
Every day like this, messin around the house
She makes me happy, yes she does
She makes me happy, she makes me happy, ah, yeah.

Ye Gods, that's awful... but the ride-out chorus of Simple Minds' 'Don't You Forget About Me' took a new record in banality -

Na, Na-Na-Na-Na, Na-Na-Na-Na, Na-Na-Na-Na, ad infinitum - why didn't they just put in a guitar or keyboard solo?
