How well can it play?. About as much as you can afford. VERY sensitive to the quality of wiring, such as power and interconnect cables, decoupling. If you can provide it with high-level wires, it will not disappoint you.

I have 3 of these, unmodified, bought @ boot sales aeons ago and paid no more than £5 each for them, they sound pretty good.

I think there is a thread about these first gen Sony PS1s someplace on pfm.

You have to have a hand held controller to select the tracks and RW or FF on CDs

Oh don’t get me wrong, the price is as bonkers as the project.

But hats off to the bloke for making the thing in the first place. I bet it cost at least half of what he’s asking to build it.

From memory early PS1's are the only device that can rip protected sacd's due to the oversight Sony only discovered later (not that I would advocate doing anything like that ).

I've been looking at the seller's more affordable modded units.

They look interesting, and I was very close to hitting the buy button!

But I'm slightly put off, by the lack of internal pics to show the mods. And also seller doesn't accept returns!

Look for a Sony PS1 c/w left and right o/p phono sockets, this is the only one worth
modding, imv.

Good hunting, they sound pretty good as in their original configuration.
