Where to get new music inspriation

I quite often wait for the usual places end of year top 100 or whatever and then spend a few weeks working through them to see if anything floats my boat, it usually means I don't hear things on the cutting edge exactly when they're released but I'm too old and uncool to care about that now anyway.

Still pick things up from Radio, some on youtube and from twitter etc.

I use Spotify to grab an album each day I like the look of from the ‘ what are you listening to right now’ thread. I’m strongly influenced by visuals so often get stuff I wouldn’t choose otherwise. There’s also a couple of posters that I gel with taste wise but I’m behind the way their taste has developed so I look keenly at their posts on the music forum.

Don’t have (or particularly hanker after) Spotify. So it’s the wireless for me. Mainly 3, 6 and the specialist shows weeknights Radio 2. Also the odd review in Shindig Mag or The Guardian piques my curiosity.

I remember hearing the end of a track and JP saying "that was Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band". I never forgot that band's name, even though that was the only time I encountered it.
When I first heard Roxy Music on Peel’s show, I thought they were a cross between the Bonzos and Zappa!

I very much feel I'm in your boat here ... radio and magazines is about as high tech as it gets. I think with spotify, just the mechanics of getting to the music feels tedious/clunky ... scroll & click... scroll and click. I may get back into the habit of listening to the specialist shows on radio.

I gave up on magazine recommendations years ago; all those "100 albums you must have" articles, stopped paying them any heed. I ended up with the likes of;

Joni Mitchell
Gram Parsons
Love

.. because I thought I "had" to have them, but realised fairly soon they were either over-rated or just not right.

a lot of my investigation is done via social media
As suggested previously follow record labels, shops, venues etc

Radio Paradise.. I've discovered and bought music from bands/artists that had not previously been on my radar. e.g. Beck, the Shins, Grateful Dead, Porcupine Tree - the sort of stuff you would rarely if ever hear on daytime radio. I realise that this isn't really 'new' music but they were still discoveries for me.

Most of my mates are into music, so a lot of recommendations come from them.
Also, perusing the new releases on Bandcamp, Boomkat, Bleep etc
The odd gem I hear on 6Music, and internet radio.

Mainly Spotify for me these days with a bit of 6 Music. Gary Crowley’s show on Radio London usually throws up something new too. Robert Elm’s daily show on Radio London was great for new music but he’s now been relegated to weekends and I stopped listening.

I check out the new releases on Pitchfork if I have time too.

Cheers BB

Listen to genre's / music you hate on spotify and then trawling through the AI recommendations many layers deep can have some interesting discoveries. It's the musical equivalent of a going down the rabbit hole on Wikipedia for a whole day.
