Went into a SE London dealer to listen to an AVI ADM9, he admitted that he didn’t make much money on them and tried to up sell to a Linn Akurate DSM and Klimax speakers. I walked out and have bought 2nd hand since then.

Bad experience at a very highly regarded Linn specialist dealer back in the late nineties/early noughties.

Haven’t bothered since.

Gulliford in Exeter earlier this year. Every so often i pop in my local dealer, chew the fat, listen to whatever is going, discuss potential upgrades and line up a demo of what I'm interested in. Planning to pop by when i get some time to hear a demo of LP12s provided by Theo Stack of the Serene/Ultimate upgrades at Gulliford. Earlier this year we discussed a P75 but I then tried an RSL phono stage at home and haven't done anything about either, with more time my pocket would be lighter and my system better but I'm busy being busy at the mo :( no excuse I'm just slow

For an actual “A vs B demo”, it must be early-mid ‘90s. It would have been for the then-current Arcam (Alpha 8?) vs Rega CD Players. Preferred the Rega, but we couldn’t accommodate a top-loader in our furniture at that time.

But I do a lot of shows.

I trundle into my dealer about once every 3 weeks, as I am his coffee dealer. An opportunity to listen to things thus presents itself.

Infidelity for Naim Uniticore, and PMCs vs Kudos (IIRC) in 2017. I ended up with the Uniticore (which has transformed my digital), and ultimately with the PMCs.

I've never had a bad dem at Infidelity, possibly because Simon's known me for 25 years. The best were with Andy Kraske in the 90s.

Myself and a mate popped into Loud&Clear in Edinburgh recently for a Dynaudio evening. We both thoroughly enjoyed it.

Out of curiosity I visited the B&O shop in Glasgow earlier this year to hear the £58,000 Beolab90 Ultimate loudspeakers. They sound excellent but hardly conducive to a happy married life given their size and appearance.

Forgot to say I popped into music matters in Stratford on Avon recently , nice to see some very nice kit on the high street there.

Whenever the ATC SCM40 actives came out. I went to listen at English Audio in Hereford. They were new, not yet run in and not warmed up. Despite the buzz around them in the mags and on the fora, I wasn't very impressed compared with my ESL63s, although maybe it was an unfair comparison.

Since then, English Audio has "retired" and there's nowhere really to go to have a listen.

2014/15, I tend to live with the same kit for a long time, or at least I have done for the past decade or so, up until I sold my main system to fund a house move and a new business venture... but I still have two Linn systems, one a full active system that I already had, I’ve not had to buy anything to “downgrade”.

When I have some spare cash to splash, I’m going to go turntable shopping because although still quite nice, my Rega P5 is the weakest link in my main setup by a fair margin, it’ll be relegated to my second system and probably be replaced by something like a Rega P8/10, another LP12 or a Xerxes 20+, or if I can get a big enough budget, an SME Model 20/Series V... which would be probably be the last deck I buy.

Late 90s ish. Listened to an Arcam Alpha 8 CD player and a Linn Mimik at Audio Excellence in Preston. Was subjected to a full on Linn tune dem and the sales chap wasn't impressed when I preferred (and bought) the Arcam.
