Virgin Broadband should I go elsewhere?

Aye there's a mob here installing fibre cable, Cityfibre it says on the box on the pavement, they're causing chaos with closed roads etc but they're pretty quick.

I had a look at the cable yesterday, green with about ten cores, they've terminated at one of those underground boxes just the engineer to connect the junction now.

I did see an OR engineer along the road at one of their cabinets in the street.

Think a mate is looking at them - he seemed fairly impressed after talking to them. Sample of one though.

Last two times with Virgin we have renegotiated at end of contract and after persevering got the same for less.

I have 1 gig broadband with virgin, rock solid and the only time I moved away from virgin was to virgin business. I am back with virgin domestic now because of the 1 gig.

me and the wife work from home and two teens on pcs, we use circa 50-70 gigs a day. 67 devices on the network, unifi throughout works great with virgin in modem only mode.

It seems most or all companies have an 'in contract' price hike built in to contracts at inflation plus (something like) 3.9%, so now it looks like many will be getting a 13 to 14% hike soon.

I stick with BT, as they are ok, and I always knock them down at the end of contract. They are a bit sneaky though, as they inform you of 'available' deals, but do not include 'new' customer prices, as they have agreed with Ofcom:

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom/latest/features-and-news/fairer-prices-for-broadband-customers

Which states:
BT, Sky and TalkTalk will allow out-of-contract customers to get the same deals as new customers, when they take out a new contract. (BT will only allow existing customers to access new customer prices when sending end-of-contract and best tariff notifications.)

So, I call them up, and get a deal cheaper than any other they have offered. So you pay the price hike, then at end of contract, get it knocked off again, and maybe a bit more, depending what deals they are pushing.

No FFTC or Virgin around here, so 32 meg is all you can get

Wierdly, when we had Virgin, it was cheaper to get a BB/TV package than just BB alone.

When I joined VM (2009?) I said I didn't want TV. They said that it was free and I more or less had to have it in my package. Recently, when I phoned Sky & BT for a quote, the TV part was £25 (can't remember which one, though; BT? maybe?)

If Virgin Media did annual payments like car and home insurance no one would touch them, 110% hike at renewal. It might be a good product but it really is a scummy company. Every year I swear I’m leaving, every year they rip me off for a month or two, here I still am.

This morning adding to my on-going anguish towards VM,
my television is not working on all channels, any other VM users across the UK this morning?

My VM landline telephone does not work for incoming calls, outgoing works fine, my fault on incoming has been intermittent since last summer.

In spite of my repeated calls to 150, they have failed to resolve this problem.
The only reason I am with VM is the high speed BB.
I have been subscribed with VM since July 2003, I have paid them thousands, what is the alternative?
I also received an email yesterday advising me of their impending price's increase.
They have priced themselves out of a very long time loyal customer.

Cityfibre are fantastic, symmetrical fibre connection so if you pay for 500 you get 500 down and 500 up and it really is a full fibre network.

Put your postcode in the checker box as there may be more than one provider selling the cityfibre service locally.
Vodafone would be good but they sell on openreach and on Cityfibre so make sure you are getting cityfibre if going for vodafone,

500 is plenty fast enough and if you can get that for £30 on cityfibre with vodafone it is a great deal.

Thanks, I tried the postcode thing last night Mark, they're not in my area yet and no plans to be soon apparently although they are laying cables up the road so no doubt they'll get here soon enough.

looking at their map they have not even made a pimple on the uk yet, so good if you are in the pimple I guess!

I actually am considering upgrading my VM broadband. I'm happy with the service but I'm at the bottom running and now working from home I find it doesn't quite meet my needs.

Now, how can I use the price rises in negotiation for an upgrade?

We have to make do with Kcom 500/250 , Cityfibre area is a few miles away :(

Cityibre have completed the 2Gbps trial in York so maybe twotone will have the option of 2Gbps or faster as he is in a new network build area and new builds will probably have the latest XGS-PON to support 10Gbps for those with deep pockets.

Aye they're actually here in EastRenfrewshire laying cable right now so I might stick with VM until CF get organised.

They're laying cables in one of the most expensive parts of Glasgow right now up in Whitecraigs just up the road from me, theyre currently in The Loaning which is just off the Ayr Road at Whitecraigs railway station.

BTW, my wife works in Cardonald.

"A large section of the build, which began in Renfrewshire on the south side of the River Clyde now stretches east beyond the Renfrewshire and Glasgow boundary into Cardonald and Mosspark, where it will eventually meet up with the network that has been laid in the south east of the City and is now moving south into East Renfrewshire."

https://cityfibre.com/news/renfrews...-build-in-renfrewshire-passes-500km-milestone

Think I'll stick with VM on the current contract until it ends in October and see if Cityfibre are any nearer us then and hopefully sign up with Vodafone for their service if not then I'll look at our options then, it's only another £7 a month and that will save us upgrading now and then ending up another VM 18 month contract.
