2024 local elections

Sue Pertwee-Tyr

Accuphase all the way down
So, how you gonna vote?

I've voted Green at my last two local elections. The candidate polls around 200 votes, so no realistic prospect of getting elected ATM, but if more people use local elections as an opportunity to signal their dismay at the main parties, then I live in hope that the numbers may start to creep up. The Green party needs to start seeing a groundswell of support, so as to be able to scale up its operations. If we want the Greens to be able to step up to the plate, we need to show them that we're asking them to do so.

We have the London Mayoral and London Assembly elections coming up. We're almost certain to have a Labour mayor - which I'm fine with - but I suspect I'll vote Green. Would be nice to get one or two additional Green members on the LA.

Likewise, I shall vote labour for Mayor, because the idea of Tory racist powellite Susan Hall winning is too horrific to contemplate, but Green for the local councillors - they won`t get in (yet) but it`s a shot across the bows for the others.

I don't think she has a hope - but there's no harm in making sure!

We have Police & Crime Commissioner
Independent seems favourite

Surrey is the only area in the country where local taxpayers contribute more to policing than the government, a whopping 55% of police funding. I’m petitioning Parliament to change this. Surrey Police underspent by £8.7m last year. In December, an inspection gave a rating of ‘Inadequate’ at responding to the public. I will put your money to work and deliver a better service.

or Lib Dems, goes on a bit

I’m offering a fresh approach to policing and crime in Surrey – based on my extensive professional and community leadership experience, and my commitment as a Liberal Democrat to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, upheld by the rule of law.

Like many people I disagree with the idea of PCCs, but we’re stuck with them for now (and I came a strong 2nd last time). That’s why I’m offering a professional, ambitious, community-based alternative – not more prisons, privatisation or self-promotion.

I’ll focus on what actually works to prevent crime and keep Surrey safe:

• bringing back community policing and working with communities to tackle antisocial behaviour, road safety and rural crime
• safeguarding victims, and prioritising women’s safety, key workers and vulnerable individuals
• concerted campaigns to cut drugs, youth crime and county lines of organised crime
• tackling offending behaviour through restorative justice, education and support for mental health and addictions.

I’ll work with and challenge police and other agencies to radically improve performance after the latest critical PEEL inspection, make every crime matter, and get justice for victims. I’ll be fiercely independent of government, demand much better value for money, and give fair, frank and balanced reports back to the people of Surrey.

I’m a local councillor, community safety lead, and former barrister, accountant and actuary with thirty years’ professional leadership experience in both private and public sectors. I’ve a strong background in criminal law and financial management and scrutiny. For ten years I’ve provided strategic direction and independent oversight to public interest organisations on a non-political basis. I’ll hold Surrey Police to account without undermining operational independence.

is this an election speech? ot doesn't make you a man of the ppl.

John Hamilton of Workers Union Party for me in local London election. Not 100% with their ideology, far from it in some areas, but they certainly more supportive of working class as far as i can see than any of the others. John Hamilton has been a good socialist activist over the years, so deserved my vote at least once. With it being a Labour stronghold here it wasn’t a wasted anti-Tory vote.

I can never vote for Labour locally after Khan and the actions of the former local Mayor I'm my area, but will still vote Labour in the general this time round as a strategic vote to rid us once and hopefully for all of the scum.

Academic question

You hate the Tory government but you know that the local Tory council is way better than all the others.

How would you vote and why?

Not Tory. Partly because given the trajectory of the Parliamentary party, it's more of an article of faith that the local parties won't follow suit and I think it more likely than not that previously effective local Tories will succumb to the madness that has overtaken the party in general. Partly also because I am sceptical about claims that Tory-led councils are really better than the alternatives. But also because I view the local elections as an opportunity to send a message. I'd probably still vote green in that situation.

Most local councillors just concern themselves with the locality, so it is true.

Voting Green is totally pointless. They are like the LibDems, they say what is popular at the time and it's all about what" I think" rather than a national policy. You may just as well not bother to vote.

I know you won't do this but just sit in the public gallery of your local council and watch who says what and above all, take note of who seems to have more idea of what they are talking about.

To vote for a second rate council because of national politics is ludicrous.

I can't agree with regard to the London elections. It's a rare example of PR in this country with the result that 3 of the 25 elected assembly members are Green. I'm very happy that they are there to give voice to everyone who thinks the climate crisis is the most urgent issue of our time. I'll carry on voting Green thanks.
The Greens promote environmental issues, that is what they are about. All the Tories and Labour Party have to do is pinch their policies and become more green and the Greens then become redundant.

The Greens and LibDems are tainted with amateurism and failure and if you really want something new, you need a new party with new ideas that will turn the electorates heads and, more importantly, have people who have the drive and ability to deploy ideas into action and results.

I don't really fancy your chances with that.

When the two main parties take the climate crisis seriously enough to adopt Green Party policies wholesale I'll happily vote for them*!

Until that time...

(*not Tories obv.)

You will soon find that the Tories and Labour will get closer and closer as time rolls on. It's already happening and will continue to do so because it's the middle ground that attracts the votes.
