It's well known that Iran is in many ways a highly developed country with a highly educated and generally welcoming people. Just a pity that it is all overlaln with extremist religious oppression.

highly developed country
There were some good things to the Shah, let's face it.

Went there in '92. Very little variation in diet, chelo kebab all the way. But a beautiful country and over-friendly people to the point it was a hassle - but it was understandable, they wanted to know everything about the western world.

Oddly a lot of comments under that video seem to be about Iran not being religious.

Probably not the best time to plug an exciting journey in Iran..
During the Iran-Iraq war (1980-88) the country remained open and was frequently crossed by backpackers travelling overland. The bombings concentrated on Abadan and other refineries. Things could very much look the same way should it start all over again.
