I don't totally disagree, but I think Ponty is claiming that 't'interweb' has increased scrutiny, whereas the reality is that the press have switched allegiance habitually since long before the 'net existed.
The internet has unquestionably increased scrutiny. Absolutely no doubt about that. It is just in areas that have no connection to established press organisations. The internet is the sole reason this shower of shit are seen as what they are, why they are caught every day going from one grift to the next. This level of corruption has always existed in the UK establishment, the last Tory government were likely as bad, as was the one before that, right back to the days of slave trading, colonialism etc. Police beatings, murders etc have occurred here and in the US forever back to the days they were called lynchings. The difference is everyone now has a smartphone camera and the ability to upload content to social media, YouTube etc. There is nowhere for this shit to hide now as ordinary people can speak truth to power. We can see what they are doing and we no longer need permission to report or publish it. You can go onto Twitter right now and tell Nadhim Zahawi to &*** right off. That is exactly the way it should be.
