Time passes slowly.....

Sloop John B

And any old music will do…
........but it’s hard to believe there was only 10 years between Trout Mask Replica and Unknown Pleasures.

The difference between rock ‘n’ roll and psychedelia was only a decade, the distance between that and punk the same, the distance between that and acid house/techno the same. Ten year cycles are good in pop music!

PS The wonderful first B52’s album is 40 this year too!

I thought you were making a reference to 'The Other Window', from 154 which was also released in 79.

'79 was a vintage year for album releases. These two were equally groundbreaking but don't get the same press.

October 1962:

Love, love me do
You know I love you
I'll always be true
So please, love me do
Whoa, love me do

Love, love me do,
You know I love you
I'll always be true
So please, love me do
Whoa, love me do

Someone to love
Somebody new
Someone to love
Someone like you

Love, love me do
You know I love you
I'll always be true
So please, love me do
Whoa, love me do

November 1967:

I am he as you are he as you are me
And we are all together
See how they run like pigs from a gun
See how they fly
I'm crying

Sitting on a corn flake
Waiting for the van to come
Corporation T-shirt, stupid bloody Tuesday
Man you've been a naughty boy
You let your face grow long

I am the egg man
They are the egg men
I am the walrus
Goo goo g'joob

Mr. City policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row
See how they fly like Lucy in the sky
See how they run
I'm crying, I'm crying
I'm crying, I'm crying

Yellow matter custard
Dripping from a dead dog's eye
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess
Boy, you've been a naughty girl
You let your knickers down

I am the egg man
They are the egg men
I am the walrus
Goo goo g'joob

Sitting in an English garden
Waiting for the sun
If the sun don't come you get a tan
From standing in the English rain
I am the egg man (How do you do sir?)
They are the egg men (The man maintains a fortune)
I am the walrus
Goo goo g'joob, goo goo goo g'joob

Expert, texpert choking smokers
Don't you think the joker laughs at you (Ho ho ho, hee hee hee, hah hah hah)
See how they smile like pigs in a sty
See how they snide
I'm crying

Semolina Pilchard
Climbing up the Eiffel tower
Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna
Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allen Poe

I am the egg man
They are the egg men
I am the walrus
Goo goo g'joob, goo goo goo g'joob
Goo goo g'joob, goo goo goo g'joob, goo goo

Were there similar cycles for the next three 10 year cycles?

Not to the same extent to my mind. As I see it the house scene and music computer technology arriving pretty much at the same time really spelt the end of the major labels and the ability of A&R men etc to define and manipulate taste as from this point no one needed a big studio or budget to do something great. As such everything diversified and went underground. We now have huge diversity with countless different micro-scenes cohabiting with no need whatsoever to impress anyone in a suit to get an advance. It is just a whole different landscape that is no longer ‘trend’ driven. The disadvantage is it is rather harder for outsiders (which we all are now at our age) to navigate.

I was pondering exactly this on the drive to work after reading the earlier post. 10 year ago was when the first XX record came out. It feels like the more recent developments have been about technology and form rather than content. We've moved from hard copies or downloads to streaming which is just as big a jump as any 10 year cycle but, in my view, has meant we've all become archivists and far more backward looking in our listening and ( for an older listener) new music doesn't seem to be offering much that's new. I'm not aware of much innovation in that period - and, being in my late 50s, have absolutely no real knowledge of garage and grime where some of this may be happening.

Its interesting that some many festivals seem to be drawing on this backward perspective - around our way they nearly all have headliners from the 70s , 80s or 90s - nothing more recent apart from tribute bands. ( One near us has Craig David headlining over Suede!) The boom in anniversary celebrations ( and marketing tie ins) is also part of this.

Seems to me that the biggest technological driver of change in music (and the world) over the last 20 years has been the internet. Our view of music no longer spans only North America and Northern Europe but crosses the world with a huge range of sounds and recognition that other cultures have popular musics at least as vital as our America / Europe culture.

It is scary to think of the short time frames between some artists/albums from 40/50/60 years ago, especially if you think back 10-15 years and compare the difference between then and now and how it has slowed down.

Although, I think as time goes on the gaps were always bound to get smaller as more and more gets covered there's less and less leaps to be made. If you think about it subjectively what could possibly be released today that would have the sort of impact as some of the albums mentioned above? I love lots of albums released this year but I wouldn't say any of them are ground breaking or completely original, they're just themes and distance cousins of albums gone before.

Couldn't agree more, the plethora of internet radio stations allows us to hear things which we would never have been exposed to previously. Obviously not all to our tastes, but still out there
