I think it is not very difficult to see who is looking for a genuine feedback so that he can improve the setup and who is just asking you to choose between vg, vg++ and excellent. If it is the former I always put my best foot forward to help. If it is the later, yes I lie.

I only talk to people if they are paying me. I find that extreme politeness and pretending to be German gets me by when they are not.
