The classical CD recommendation thread...

If you buy a lot of classical CDs what would you recommend in terms of VFM and SQ? What are your outstanding can't do without recordings?

I buy and listen to mainly old vinyl but am certainly missing out on some great modern recordings.

Any composer you like, single discs or box sets.

Over to you!

I'll kick the thread off with this little Berg, Webern and Schoenberg String Quartets box by the LaSalle Quartet. It's a lovely thing and a bargain.

Another, though more minimalism than classical, is this Steve Reich Phases box set. It's just insanely good value for money. Probably worth buying a few for when the value rockets after deletion to be honest!

Is that the one you played me a bit of the other week? Sounded superb.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that LaSalle Quartet box is what I played. I've not got a huge number of string quartet boxes, so really it was that or this very nice Beethoven String Quartet box, which is another amazing bargain IMO.

Here's another 20th century classical bargain: Varése Complete works, I've had this one for years and I seem to recall paying a lot more than that for it! It's amazing stuff.

One for the Stravinsky fans too, Works Of Igor Stravinsky, it's all the classic US Columbia recordings conducted by the man himself. Some mono, but mostly very decent '6-eye period' stereo and worth the asking price..

As noted above, re-issues are usually very good deals these days, especially box sets and individual CDs in card envelopes. But there are plenty of good to excellent new recordings every month too. Rather than trawl through the collection, here are some of the better ones from the pile by the CD player. "Recent" in my book is 1990 or later (I know...) Some are good deals, others (usually the most recent) are full price:

Haydn - Quartets opus 20 by Qu. Mosaïques. Lovely interpretation. Naive/Astrée, 1992 re-issued 2008.
Salonen conducting his own Piano Concerto, Helix, Dichotomie with LA Phil. Excellent SQ. DG, 2008 (not discounted).
Vivaldi - Concerti per fagotto vol 1 (2009) & 2 (2012) by Azzolini on Naive. Superb interpretations and very good SQ. I love Vol 1. Full price.
Telemann - Brockes Passion box by Jacobs on Harmonia Mundi. Not cheap.
Bruckner - Symphonies by Celibidache, 1990 recording, good SQ, idiosyncratic recordings that I like. EMI, not too expensive for 12 CDs.
Beethoven/Berg - Violin Concertos Isabelle Faust/Abbado Harmonia Mundi 2011. Very nice interpretation, good SQ. Also like her Martinu concerto with Bêlohlávek, also on HM.
Beethoven - 9th Symph. Vänskä and Minnesota Orchestra. Excellent interpretation and SQ, 2006.
Bach - Concertos Italiens by Tharaud. Harmonia Mundi, 2005.
Bach - Partitas 1, 5, 6 by Perahia, Sony, 2009.
Pergolesi/Scarlatti Stabat Mater Concerto Italiano on Naive, 1998. Excellent interpretation and SQ.
Mozart - Quintets K 593 & 614 on Calliope (1995-2007) by the Talich Qu. One of the best recordings in my little collection, both in terms of interpretation and SQ. The Beethoven Razoumovsky Op 59/2 and Op 130 from the same house is almost as good.
Biber - Rosary Sonatas by Manze/Egarr, 2004. Good (slightly dry?) interpretation. Harmonia Mundi, not cheap.
Mozart - Piano concertos 21, 14, 15 by Zacharias on DG Gold (that's Dabringhaus & Grimm, not the usual DGG). Nice interpretation and superb SQ. 2010, not cheap.
Mondonville - Grands Motets by Christie & Co. 1997 on Erato. Lovely stuff from a little known baroque composer.
Korngold - Symph. in F by Albrecht/OP Strasbourg on PentaTone. Lovely interpretation and lush SQ, couples with Much Ado about Nothing.
Bartók - Piano Concertos by Boulez, DG 2005, good esp. for the 3d IMHO. Prefer Anda in the 2nd.
Stravinsky - symphonies (3 movements, Psalms, in C) by Rattle/BPO. Good interpretation, very good SQ. 2008, EMI.
Beethoven - Sonatas 109/110/111 by Brendel, 1996 recording on Philips. Superb interpretation and good SQ.
Marais - Suitte d'un Goût Etranger (IV livre) by Savall & Co. on Alia Vox, 2006. Superb interpretation & SQ. Ditto for the Second Livre CDs (2003) by same, never very far from the CDP.
Telemann - Flute concertos by Pahud/Berlin Barock Solisten on EMI, and his Mozart concertos with BPO/Abbado.
Couperin (Louis) - harpsichord suites by Rousset on harmonia mundi (2010). Excellent interpretation of lovely music on a fine XVIIth century instrument with good SQ.
Bartók 5th / Hindemith 4th quartet by the Zehetmair quartett on ECM.

Re-issues:
Haydn 11 Piano Sonatas by Brendel. Excellent interpretation, good to vy good SQ. Recorded late 70s early 80s, re-issued in 2009 (Decca).
Beethoven Complete String Quartets by Quartetto Italiano: classic recordings from the late 60s early 70s. Good SQ, great interpretation, good price.
Mozart - quartets by the Amadeus Qu. on DG.

Two lieder sets I wouldn't want to be without are Peter Schreier and Andras Schiff's three discs of Schubert song-cycles (Die Schone Mullerin, Winterriese and Schwanengesang), and Anne Sophie Von Otter and Bengt Forsberg's cd of Grieg songs. The Schubert is available as a boxed set on Amazon for just over £25, the Grieg is around £10. Wonderful singing and playing.

I recently picked up Pletnev's Rachmaninov Syms on DG. ASTONISHING SQ. Sorry to shout, but they are about the best recordings I own, and they're "only" red-book, and now at a ridiculous price:

Yevgeny Sudbin's Rachmaninoff and Scriabin CDs are some of the best recorded piano I've heard:

Of course, all of the above are brilliantly performed.

With regards to the Kleiber recordings referred to above: pretty close to perfect performances, sound is a bit iffy.

There's nothing "iffy" about the sound of Carlos Kleiber's DGG recordings.

He was unlike any other, and each of his (few) recordings is definitive, so buy the set while you can.

This is my most recent purchase

There's some really haunting melodies on it (if you're into sacred music, that is).

Great stuff folks. 2 boxes already ordered. I think I'll keep an eye on the Kleiber to see if it goes down again. His Brahms 4 is one of my most treasured records.

Bergs playing Beethoven and Stravinsky boxes arrived yesterday. The Beethoven is fabulous and an interesting contrast with my Italian Quartet vinyl. SQ fab too.

Cheers,

Nic.

Can anyone point me in the direction as to which version of Kathleen Ferrier/Bruno Walter's Mahler 'Das Lied Von der Erde' I should go for sound quality wise?

Do I go for the Decca 'Legends' release or, as the recording is out of copyright, the Naxos version??

I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed the Ferrier documentary ('An Ordinary Diva'?) shown recently on BBC4 and want to get hold of some of her best recordings.

Ditto, both are superb performances albeit from a very different perspective. But both work, it just depends on your mood...

Try switching between the Op18 No.6...

You might want to check out the Alban Berg playing the 6 Bartok quartets as well...

Go for the Decca: despite the recording being out of copyright, it was Decca who paid for the session, and it's Decca who have access to the mastertape. The Naxos, by contrast, is essentially a pirate copy, which has to have been mastered from a second generation source.

Now that you have those great traversals, you owe it to yourself to get the Vegh Quartet's intensely spiritual 1970s recordings on Auvidis Valois, and the remarkable Busch Quartet's 1930s/1940s late quartets on a 3CD EMI set.
