the best artists of the decade

gordon

self-righteous, but never right
while thinking about the 10 best albums of the decade, i realized my selections didn't exactly reflect who i thought were the best artists/bands, many of whom had put out a strong collection of work, but not necessarily a top 10 album. so here goes.

new pornographers - indie supergroup, pure pop perfection, nearly

calexico - california-mexican border mariachi/jazz, of sorts.

decemberists - old timey music, i guess, but not like "oh brother where art though"

against me! - punk with country and folk flirtations

iron and wine - folk

the hold steady - the band jim carroll wanted to be? drug culture, religious themes: shake and bake.

death cab for cutie - emo without the feedback

okkervil river - alt country

sufjan stevens - folk explosion

a few that span to past 2 decades:

guided by voices - beatles deconstructed

alejandro escovedo - folk, country with a punk ethos

brian jonestown massacre - neo psychedelic

built to spill - emo jam band

Taking live performances into account too, I'd add The Arcade Fire to your list. Two strong albums, (I was a bit meh about Neon Bible at first, but it snuck up on me), a blinding EP, and fabulous, communicative live shows, regardless of venue size. They got me listening to plenty of other stuff too (Broken Social Scene, Stars, etc).

the strokes
manic street preachers
radiohead
david byrne
the killers
tool
belle and sebastian
blur
beck

The Killers. If you look at their albums and see just how many hits and more to the point, very good tracks they've produced they are in a league of their own. They are also going from strength to strength too as they are just getting better and better with each album, surely a sign of a very good band. I rest my case.

I'll second Mr Cave, started the noughties in 2001 with no more shall we part, still one of my favorite albums, mid noughties came abbotoir blues, double album of genius, followed by dig lazurus dig, hes just gets better with age.

Best Artists mmm...

I’m also leaning toward That Nick Cave fellow.

His earlier pre “Bad Seeds” stuff is …um…. Interesting.

The period from “The good son” to “Murder Ballads” saw him find his muse and now his music is extraordinarily complex, deep and his lyrics are exquisite as they swing from existential melancholy to hard-edged sarcastic anger.

Oh yes “No more shall we part” is one of best albums, but don’t overlook “The Boatman’s call” either. By the way has any one else read his book “And the Ass Saw the Angel“? It’s a disturbing but mesmerizing read and an interesting insight into the mind behind his work.

Another artist I would like to include is Tom Waits as well as an honorable mention for PJ Harvey.

LPSPinner.

Agree with Cave - amazing that he is missing from nearly every end of 00's poll. I'd also go for David Sylvian -not prolific but everything he's done this decade has been of a really high quality.

Kevin

Destroyer - amazing run of records over the last decade.
Shearwater
Madlib in all his many forms.
MF DOOM

Nina Nastasia
Bonnie Prince Billy
Joanna Newsom
Shearwater
Andrew Bird
Lambchop
Tomasz Stanko
Radiohead
Mogwai

I would agree with Bonny Prince Billy and Radiohead but would add the Super Furry Animals. They should be the biggest band in the world.....but I'm glad that they aren't.

Glenda

IMO The best artists for this decade are,
The strokes
Interpol
Elliot smith
Daft punk
And radiohead.

There has been some great music in the past decade, and performing live has become profitable so a lot of bands have been touring (and old ones reforming).

So there is quite a lot to choose from.

I guess I would pick one from either end of the decade:
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory was my best album of 2000.
The Mars Volta - Just got into them at the end of '09.
