Tchaikovsky 1812 - Telarc.

Just browsed an e-mail from HD Tracks, and listened to samples of this download, and am quite impressed. However, as they're reluctant to let me download this album, I've had a search round, and found it available on Amazon in DVD-A format, and Telarc says they've done also remastered in DSD and SACD versions. As I don't think my Arcam AAA5 will play DVD-A, and my Panasonic DMR-BW780 doesn't support it either, I'm left with DSD or SACD. A quick check on Wikipedia seems to say that, essentially, they're the same thing - am I correct in this, please? Anyway, I jumped in and ordered the SACD version, as I can play SACDs - at least I think I can. Or am I only getting the CD version? Any help would be much appreciated, please.

Dunno the answer to your question, but you may get a better response on this by posting it in the audio room.

Thanks, PsB, but I think I have answered my own question. I remembered an old Pioneer DV-576 DVD player in the loft, which can play SACDs, so have set that up, and am enjoying some Living Stereo SACDs, plus DSOTM 30th remaster, in SACD. So it seems that DSD is SACD, essentially, and I'll not need DVD-A capability. Just have to find space for another box.

the 1978 version dorati is the standard..

BUT DSD is the pulse density modulation scheme used to make SACD. (like wavs for cd)

Hi, Teddy Ray, I already have a Dorati version, on a Mercury Living Presence compilation from 1995, coupled with Capriccio Italien and Beethoven's Wellington's Victory, recorded late fifties. I see that, as you say, DSD and SACD are the same; and checking my Pioneer player further, found that it is a multi - format player, and can play both SACD & DVD-Audio, so have been doing some listening, using DSOTM SACD, and the Beatles Love Album on DVD-A, and to be honest I'm not all that convinced of any improvements over my Avondale AAA5+ CDP, at the moment.
I'm feeding the SACD through optical cable to my Cyp DAC, but DVD-A will only output from the analogue outputs of the Pioneer, assume using onboard DAC. Further listening required before I jump in and buy more SACDs, I think. Thanks for all the help.
By the way, I like the 1812, as with most of my Classical recordings because of the sonic experience and physical involvement, particularly the bells of 1812, and don't have the knowledge of lots of other PFM'ers to understand the more suble differences between performers and orchestras. Which, presumably, is why we have better quality recordings and remasters?

And we both know that it is your opinion to which you refer :D .

Indeed not. I referred to the music. The fact it's often coupled with Wellington's Victory (unbelievable dross but lucrative for canny Ludwig at the time) says it all. In fact the only thing the 1812 is good for is showing off hifi systems so I wish the op luck in his search.

My Telarc recording arrived today, and I'm enjoying it, but only through my CDP. It's quite dynamic. Will have to compare both versions over the next few days. Haven't had chance to try the SACD tracks.

It's also good for showing off the classical music snobs...;)

Maybe we can agree that it's not the greatest thing ever Tchaikovsky wrote.

If you're using an optical cable, you're most likely just listening to the normal CD layer of the disc, not the (DSD) SACD layer. Until recently and the advent of HDMI connections to certain compatible DACS (there are one or two other specialist ways of doing it, too) it was impossible to get the SACD put out digitally, because Philips/Sony designed it that way.
Try listening via the analogue outs, but there, much depends on the capability of the onboard DACs. The Pioneer was quite well liked and considered a bargain, I remember.

Be careful with the Telarc 1812. It has a tremendous dynamic range, & those digital cannon can and do take out loudspeakers!
