Stax Valve Energisers

ACM

Vinyl Junkie
After having lived with the solid-state SRM-717 energiser for the past 8 years or so, I have just bought the valve-based SRM-007tA.

This is the first piece of valve equipment that I have owned, and I would like to know whether I should just leave it switched on permanently (as I always did with the 717) or whether it is better to switch it off when not in use.

Any views or advice would be much appreciated...

Hi Adrian,

Hope all is well with you.

As Fox said, turn it off between uses or the valves will need replacing too regularly.

Also, I found that the Stax valve energisers run pretty warm, so give it plenty of room for ventilation.

cheers
Jason

I had a SRM-007t and always switched it off. There was a very good thread on head-fi about balancing the valves and the 007 in general.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I have the energiser on the top shelf of a Hutter rack, so ventilation is not an issue. This is probably a "how long is a piece of string" kind of question, but how long can I expect a set of valves to last?

If it is a nice circuit, and they are not stressed, up to about 10,000 hours.

Could be as a low as few hundred if they are being over-run.
