Speakers - left or right?

As long as the polarity is right does it really matter?

I have an ancient record of my Dad's called 'Give Yourself a Stereo Checkout' which involves a very plummy gentleman and as he puts it "a very pretty girl" walking about with metronomes. I still use it to check the basics like phase etc.

It wasn't the lovely Samantha, nowadays found sitting on Jack Dee's right hand by any chance
