Sonos Play

Morning, just been chatting to a friend about hi fi. He says he uses a Sonos Play 5 system and I’m trying to get my head around how it works. Apparently he wirelessly connects his laptop to the Sonos Play’s using an app and hey presto he has music, BUT there doesn’t appear to be any amplification involved?? Are these Sonos speakers just like some glorified (and very expensive!) air buds?

There are electronics in the loudspeaker that process the Wi-Fi signal and amplify the drivers. The 5’s also have a line input for such things as turntables.
