Social media crash

I don’t have any social media account. I steer well clear of all that stuff. I have no use for it.
Forums suit me just fine.

Been watching the whistleblower Frances Haugen testify. I think she is what they call a star witness.

Why do old people think that youngsters use Facebook? It’s so twee, that illusion.
Indeed. Most older users of Facebook like me (and I hardly use it now except to look at other peoples' dinners) will have signed up when they were younger and it was all new and, errr exciting. Meanwhile, younger people will have moved on to even more exciting and vacuous platforms. It was ever thus.

Social media is the primary cause of the collapse of the fabric of society. I've been saying that for well over 10 years now. It ruins children's lives, causes untold stress and family tensions, allows the spread of hate and ignorance and encourages stupid people to be even more stupid. I concede that there are some benefits, but these are inconsequential in comparison to the enormous harm done.
Amazing, apart from conceding some benefits, that’s exactly how I felt when watching reports of the Tory Party conference on the news.

Forums is for people with a particular hobby or interest. HiFi is one example.
Social media is for people who aren't interested in anything. Well, they have to hang somewhere...

I find it interesting that big companies and organizations uses FB. They let someone else control their information.

Forums are one form of social media, where a collection of people with a common interest gather to socialise and share their interest virtually.

The likes of FB, offer both common interest and broader collections of people - providing tools to support comms.

Anyone who thinks a forum is not part of the broader social media offering is in denial.

Always pays to know the facts. According to the below, you appear to be a tad misinformed. 25-34 largest share of users; that's young to me.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1030055/facebook-users-united-kingdom/

Even though that is a monetised link that I can’t read properly without paying it is clear that 13-17 year olds, who most would consider ‘young folk’, is the smallest group. 25-34 aren’t kids, they are often the parents!

PS If you are worried what your school-age kids/grandkids are reading on the internet chances are it is not Facebook!

Don't forget, though, that 13 is the lowest age at which the state deems it legal for kids to partake of social media, and many parents may well restrict their offspring's access to channels not designed specifically for kids, until they are a little older. So a relative dearth of, say, 13-15 year olds will skew the figures for that cohort a bit.

I think the difference is that youngsters don’t exclusively use Facebook and are likely to frequent a multitude of different antisocial media.

Most people have an account once into their teens, but they just don’t appear to use it. It’s not immediate enough. It’s the same with traditional texting, you’ll be waiting a long time for a reply if you send one!

FWIW whenever some kid decides to sit next to me on the tram I tend not to even recognise the apps they are so skillfully banging away on. That doesn’t mean anything as I deliberately avoid everything bar Facebook as that is where a lot of my old muso friends hang out and a very occasional look at Twitter. I actively avoid requests to join new platforms as pfm sucks most of my waking life and other than a quick look at Facebook I just don’t have the time!

PS The thing that amazes me from my ex-IT perspective is how young folk who have grown up with smartphones etc have adapted to thumb-typing. Many look to have typing speed way, way in excess of what I can manage with both hands on a proper IBM Model M! I’m absolutely hopeless on a phone and not much better on my iPad (I just tap away with one finger).

My 21 and 23yr old girls make virtually no use of FB. The 21 yr old twins (uni students) are on snapchat pretty much continuously and Instagram very frequently (multiple times per day). The 23 yr old (full time working) has much less interest in stuff, esp Snapchat, but does use Insta a bit.

Boys are different again - neither of the boyfriends in their lives at present makes much use of social media - they have it, but their phone screens are not surgically glued to their eyeballs.

If I wish to message any of the girls, Whatsapp family group or text message gets a quick response.
