Replacing a laser

I have a Marantz 4050 cd recorder with twin cds, the right is the player and the left is the recorder. The left plays (have'nt tried recording yet) but the left will not read a cd. Is it easy to replace a cd laser assembly ?

If it is the recorder that isn't working then replacement lasers are nigh on impossible to find. They're Philips units that have long since ceased production, if I remember correctly. The right should be easier to find -it's a VAM1250 so google just told me.

Thanks for the useful response avole, its worth getting an old cd player with such a laser in it and doing a straight swap, or I could look on ebay....
