I read about this on the Diverse Vinyl website: Record Store Day is "a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally."
We are told that, "This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music." Ummm, nice.
And would you believe, there's a website to tell people all about it:

While I admire the sentiment, I can't help feeling there's something a bit too earnest and self-consciously "indie" about it all. A bit like the film of "High Fidelity" rather than the book. Still, Diverse Vinyl will have Goldie Looking Chain in their shop so it can't be all that bad.
