Record Shops

If anyone’s in the South London area I can highly recommend Union Records in Sutton. Situated within a great music venue called The Sound Lounge, it has a great selection of all types of music, on new and ‘preloved’ vinyl. Here’s a picture of one small section of the shop, which is run by musician Danny George Wilson:-

I grew up round there and spent many a happy afternoon in Chick-A-Boom Records when I should really have been in school...

Had a quick look in at the newly opened Upside Down Records in Deptford this afternoon. Lovely shop and they seem to be doing some nice classic hi-fi too - a Systemdek and a pair of Tannoys for example. Nothing caught my eye this time but I'll be popping back.

Photo from their website - there are more records in the racks now : )

Stu is a good guy, and his prices are reasonable too. Only last night I was browsing his new release email and found this new live Can album substantially cheaper than at Bezos World. If you go, tell him the shop’s Official Elderly Jazz Fan sent you. He’ll get it.

If you are more interested in second-hand then the Leamington Record Store in Spencer St is worth a look. And Head in the Priors shopping mall has a foot in both camps.
I popped in yesterday and thought it was great. Nice place and selection. As you say the prices were good too - I could have saved quite a bit if I wasn’t already up to date with my BN Classic and TP collections!

The rugby was on in the bar area downstairs and it was a good atmosphere. It was only a flying visit this time so didn’t get to visit the other shops, but loved Leamington and will definitely be back for a longer look around.

Apart from anything else, it was nice to be able to drive to the shop, and park right opposite easily and relatively cheaply for half an hour. There are so many places where you can’t do that anymore. I normally prefer walking, but it helps when in a hurry.

I’m glad you liked it! Next time I suggest parking in one of the side streets to the west of Dale St. The one next to Kwik Fit is my favourite. Five minutes walk and you get two hours’ parking for free.

Best to stay quiet about the joys of Leamington, though. We Warwickshire types like to keep it to ourselves while sending the hordes down the road to Stratford.

That's the coolest record shop I've ever seen, the Reggae Soca Calypso cd cassette shop. Not the florence shop.

Imagine living next door! The bass, the smoke, drive you insane.

Thanks for the tip. I'd like to spend a bit longer next time and walk around a bit more. I hadn't realised that Presto Music is there as well. I;ve bought quite a lot from them online before.

It's another place to add to my weekend away list (but I'll keep as quiet as possible about it!)

I've been to Move On in Florence (first picture) -its a record shop within a craft beer bar, in a very picturesque location. I could not NOT go in. Very knowledge and helpful guy behind the sales desk, who went off an found me some cardboard mailers to re-use to get my LPs home safely in the suitcase. Not far away (right opposite my hotel!) was Sleeve Records who found me some jazz rarities

The trick to keeping records safe in your suitcase is to buy a few dozen so they form a nice solid block in their record shop bags.

So what if you have to bin your clothes to make space? You've got other clothes...

I stumbled across two record shops in Hay on Wye today. Both run by friendly owners. The second called Tom’s Records was spinning vinyl on a Rega P1 and Dali speakers (couldn’t see what amp). It sounded sublime and certainly kept you scouring the racks 😀

Tom's is excellent and he is a jazz specialist. There is also one in a "Fairtrade" shop in the town and one up an alleyway near The Castle but it has so much stock firmly wedged in the crates that browsing becomes difficult. If you approach Hay on Wye from the Tenbury area, then Leominster also has 3 interesting vinyl emporiums.

In Witney, Oxfordshire, where I live we have an excellent record shop called Truck.
The Prop. is an excellent guy and very fair with sellers and buyers with his prices.
He also sells audio equipment, both new and vintage.
I often repair turntables for him and he puts up my vintage speakers for sale, on occasion.
The shop often has older collectable amplifiers, such as Quad.

Does anybody have any experience of King Bee Records in Manchester.
Haven't been for a few years, but it was always a pretty good shop when I did... good variety of genres, CDs and vinyl... reasonably priced. Staff seemed knowledgeable and friendly too. Worth a visit I'd say.

Thanks for that, i have been thinking about paying a visit. Cheers.

Of course there is the Diskery in Birmingham - under new management now and moved site just along Bristol St from their old place in Bromsgrove St - still just as friendly as ever.
Was there about 1 month ago acquired a copy of Who will save the world? - Groundhogs

I think one or two members are down Hastings, St Leonards way. I noticed on Instagram this place has recently opened - coffee, records and vintage hi-fi.

I honestly tend to have fairly low expectations these days, but Elephant Records in Winchester defies them. Three times in a row I've popped in thinking "there's no way they'll have that", and then they just....do.

The slight problem is that, while he has nice speakers (Neat Iota Alphas), he doesn't actually have a website yet, other than on Facebook which I can't access because I got off there years ago.
