Because they have an electronic crossover and a separate power amp for each driver. Same system as Naim use. No actual requirement for power amps to be built into the cabinet. Used to be the norm for large studio monitors but amps have got a lot smaller with the advent of class D so less common now.
Indeed. It certainly makes them a bit impractical for domestic use.
I've always thought a victorian detached house with large chimney breast would be an ideal home for some of these, but it would definitely need to be detached!
