I would like to here one in my system, but the Allegri was massively good VFM - on line input improves on my EAR868.

Ouch! That's pretty steep for a passive pre. I do like the regular Allegri+ which is £2500, but there are good deals out there, and you can get a nearly new one for about half that.

Expect little or no difference between a £100 passive and a £10,000 one! They are just a switch and some resistors... there is no scope for anything other than n'th degree differences!

Not my experience in my system. The Allegri is superb, others were OK but preferred my EAR868.

Indeed yes! Oh and you may get more steps to the attenuator and hopefully a mega quality switch that lasts for years in an expensive one. Other than that... nah.. a resistors a resistor basically!

The fancy case probably adds more to the cost of a piece of equipment than the innards. Having said that people do judge by appearance.

That'[s almost always the case. The expensive bits of an amplifier are the case, power supply transformer, and the big capacitors. Then maybe the switchgear. The rest of it is for buttons.
