Passive pre-amp with remote/motorised volume control

This is what I use and it is superb; and very nice having a remote.
I also agree the icOn is the best - I heard it at a show and it was brilliant - also love the use of the Apple remote control - really nice. I would get one but too rich for me price-wise.

If you can afford the icOn - that's the one to have.

The cheap Schiit might be good too also using relays for the volume pot.

Very jealous :)
A remote is what I miss with mine. I do have a (crazy?) plan to motorize it with an Arduino controlled stepper motor though… will see how that pans out.
A Bent Audio TAP-X should be very nice as well, but rare as hens teeth outside of the US.

I used a Townsend for a year or so. Great pre-amp, but I felt its sound quality was slightly reduced if you connected more than one device to it. Also, in this world of playlists minor adjustments to the volume is essential.

I have very happily stuck, works superbly with my 300dr - and everything else I have thrown at it to date.

Another vote for the Schiit saga s
If I were to buy again I would get the s which is a passive without the valve section.
I can’t hear much difference at all between the passive and valve buffer section.
I also have a dual mono Khmozo and I think the Schiit has the edge.
From memory the Khmozo remote passives don’t switch the inputs.
There is a good warranty with Schiit equipment.
