Owen Jones packs in social media

If I ever wished to present an argument as to just how irrelevant, out of touch with reality and generally ridiculous the results of the most expensive and elitist tiers of private education can be Douglas Murray would likely be my 'Exhibit A'. It is unlikely any further exhibits would be required.

I might be tempted to wheel out a few more just to be sure. In fact, there seems to be a lot of them on the telly.

It's the insult du jour. Typically used by far-right trolls against lefties and liberals to suggest they're being "too sensitive" (i.e. they care about other people and despise racism, etc.).

Not really, at least not in my opinion. I am a Liberal and I understand the insult / word. I think it is a generational divider, more than a political one.

The origins of Snowfake stem from of the town of Snowflake, AZ from where people with allergies and immune system related illnesses went and were then followed by people seeking refuge in the desert to escape fragrances, electricity, Wi-Fi and other facets of modern life.

Thanks, I had never heard of this and always assumed the term was based on the delicacy of a single snowflake (touch it and it melts).

Richgilb - the context I described (alt-right trolling) is the only one I've ever seen the term "snowflake" used. Are you saying it's used much more widely by young people?

I remember snowflake being a insult at school in the 70's used by blacks against whites. Never knew the derivation though.

I liked Owen Jones until he went against Corbyn not long after he was elected.

The other week I watched a video where he said Corbyn should make way for somebody else, because if he doesn't the left won't get another chance in the Labour Party. That made sense.

If Labour loses the general election the left will be blamed. Blair, Dark Lord Mandelson and their proteges, will turn the organization back into Tory Lite.

It is a shame that Owen Jones has been abused online, but that's the price you pay for being a political commentator. If you slate the leader of the Party you are a member of, you will be argued against.

Jack

Help me here Jack, Blair and Mandelson are to blame if they are leading the party and also if they are not? So the left will never be to blame for their ineffectiveness? That's neat. You should run, sounds like a no lose situation. There seems something rather odd about blaming people who won elections for the failure of others to achieve the same. Without power, you can do zip.

Regarding your last point, I doubt Owen Jones was just 'argued against'. Given the comments on some of the press articles anyway.

Other way round, the 'grown-ups' use it to talk about the kids being a bit wet. From the author of Fight Club, who claims it is his term:

"Every generation gets offended by different things but my friends who teach in high school tell me that their students are very easily offended."

^ With the alt.right being a carrier for racism and white supremacism and a love for confederate cosplay -- that seems highly plausible.

If I get called a snowflake I am pleased because that level of underestimation means pretty much everything about me, my motives, ideology and offensive capabilities remain unknown. Even the insults the alt-right throw at people opposing them can be used to tactical advantage.

It really is not used by these types of people where I come from. Not at all. I don't mix with any of these types. My friends are mainly musicians and artists. my partner is a nurse. The only right wing person I talk to regularly is my dad and he calls me a socialist.

I don't know any one on the alt right, actually I am not sure what it is yet.

The term snowflake is banded about a bit. We know what it means, we are not right wing. We know that when it is used people are referring to the next generation down.

Jeez, so much right wing paranoia on this forum. Some people here seem to think anyone not on the hard left is a nazi. And anything you don't have knowledge of, you assume is nasty right wing stuff.

Fair enough rich, I accept that's how you and your circle use it. I believe you're a self-declared Lib-Dem so not far-right by any stretch of the imagination.

But you need to be aware that "snowflake" is also commonly used by the far-right to dismiss the concerns of liberals and progressives. It's most often sighted in the comments section of articles about Trump or Brexit, or on social media platforms. Maybe you simply don't frequent such places as often as I do.

Must have been quickly seized then. It was only a year ago when it came up over beers for the first time to me. We were discussing the merits of extermination of the old, infirm and unemployed.....

And the second rule of discussing the merits of exterminating the old, infirm and unemployed is to not discuss the old, infirm and unemployed...
