Oil for Nottingham Analogue Hyperspace

There’s little stress, or friction.

Think my Dais platter is around 23 kg. If I remember correctly, the bearing is simply a chunk or metal resting/revolving in a scooped-out chunk of metal. No stress? Well. oil be damned ! Am embarking on weight-lifting exercises in preparation for lifting the platter on mine; it was a struggle when I was fitter and younger.

Asked my local librarian the other day, where I could find books on lubrication. " Over there in the non-friction section. sir", he answered.

Well at least he didn't direct you to sexual health education

If a platter is as heavy as that then there will be stresses.
Mind you, 23kg seems excessive.

Possibly why Rega recommended Singer oil then.

No, that'd be the non fuction section.
Have you no one local who could give you a hand with the platter ? @Mike Reed

Yes, I have the local hifi mafia to call on if essential, but I only use it once a week and eventually will get round to changing cart's (sth I've been putting off for years) and bearing maintenance at the same time. Every time the needle drops into the groove, I say "ahhhhh" and postpone any thoughts of fettling.:)

The bearing is obviously designed to cope with the mass of the platter & mat, it's quite a bit bigger than your average bear(ing)

Certainly is. Tom Fletcher was no dope, all the bearings he designed go on for ever. I've never seen a worn one.

I have a customer with a Dais he bought some 25 years agp. He has it running 24/7, except for every two years when he lubricates it and it looks and sounds as good as ever.

...I'll get me coat! :D

Sounds like the 24/7 Naim protocol of old. Wonder why he does that, unless he's playing records 24/7 and doesn't need sleep. This'd put a different aspect onto styli longevity though.:)
He does it because he does play a lot of records but mainly because Tom Fletcher had all his turntables running 24/7.

When I recently renovated a Thorens 124 I ended up buying a litre of the specialist oil for it. It's Mobile DTE Oil Medium Turbine Oil ISO 46 I can send you a small bottle how much do you need?

Nicely spotted. Made me chortle That Mike Reed is a bugger!

Probably guilty as charged, but can't say I understand this, ToTo Man, although those figures just don't make sense (over a million?????).

Well, I'm always pleased to amuse, but this one's passed my humour receptors by. Humour me !o_O

If you have a little to spare and the price is sensible I would be interested in trying this oil
